thanks Shadowssister

Lots of piano players here! I've played since I was 10 and it's my main source of relaxation and therapy

Ho Rena I'm adopted too and always like to meet other who have been and how they feel about it themselves. But I know that's personal so I just wanted to say "Hi" as it's something neat to have in common with someone!

I am adopted.

I have one brother who is the natural son of my parents.

I have met my half sister (different fathers) and we don't like each other very much.

I used to sell BC Cherries and Taber corn out of the back of my truck for 3 summers and made the best money I ever did and got an awesome tan!

I played the piano for 12 years.

I would like to have a tattoo of a Loon on my leg but my Mother would have a fit.

I REALLY want to be an advocate for all those dealing with MS but don't know how (just like the MS Society of Canada).

I want to grow up and be a race car driver.

I am terrified of water and don't know how to swim.

Well few people here know anything about me so this would be an easy one for me to say!
My favorite thing to do is dance and I usually turn a good musical on the TV like Greece and West Side Stort and try to memorize the dances and the songs!
Very very silly I know!

But I've been doing it since I was a young girl and it's almost theraputic although the neighbors I'm sure think I'm out of my mind or having some sort of epeleptic fit!!

I haven't been able to do it in some time now because of my pain and dizziness but the moment I feel better broadway better watch out cause I have alot of catching up to do, I've heard that new movie Hairsray is very cute with all the dancing and singing!

I enjoy playing the piano. I often play for worship at church, although I only took 2 years of lessons when I was young. I just play by ear and chording.

I have one sister: she’s 11 years younger than me and loves life, loudly.

I graduated highschool in three years, volunteered a year at a local children’s hospital and then finished a demanding six- semester degree in two years.  (let’s not mention stress, ok?).

I love photography and crocheting and have entered some of my better stuff in out tri-state fair and actually won. (Surprised even me!)

I love to read comics such as Garfield and watch animated movies such as The Incredibles and Cars. (Why watch or read boring or sad things when life gives you enough of that already?)

I have family and close friends, that I’ve known for years, on every corner of the U.S., and I’ve drove from the bottom of the U.S. to the tippy top of the US to the Canadian line every two years to see family. We are a kinda close-knit family in some ways…. but we live far apart.

And, as you all know, I have found that to love life is the greatest gift you can give yourself.

I have five brothers and we all have names that start with "D" (mom never knew which name to yell out when we were doing something bad, lol)

I am extremely claustrophobic.  I can't sit in a bus/plane for fear I won't be able to get out if I need to.  Makes MRIs fun! (valium? yes please)

I grew up living right next to L.L. Bean's in Freeport Maine. My grandfather was L.L. Bean's (the man, not just the store) treasurer in the 1930s and my entire family has worked there at one point or another.

I left college here in Maine to move to Olympia Washington and attend school there without any real plans and all alone when I was 20.  (wish I had that confidence now)

Before I got married in 2000 I had lived alone for five years in my mid-twenties.  Well, I had two cats to keep me company.

A woman came home to find her husband in the kitchen shaking frantically, almost in a dancing frenzy, with some kind of wire running from his waist towards the electric kettle.

Intending to jolt him away from the deadly current, she whacked him with a handy plank
of wood, breaking his arm in two places.
Up to that moment, he had been happily listening to his Walkman.

I'm pretty new her, so there's lots no one knows. I  love the San Francisco 49ers, I'd rather eat mashed potatoes and gravy than dessert, I have been married to my best friend for 32 years (and that's not counting 5 years of dating), reading is my idea of a good time, my favorite book is Pride and Predjudice,  I am a quiet neighbor but a noisy friend, I believe in God and shopping therapy,  and I try to smile even when I don't feel like it.

The Evolution of Medicine

2000 BC- Here, eat this root

1000 BC- That root is heathen, say this prayer

1850 AD- That prayer is superstition, drink this potion

1940 AD-  That potion is snake oil, take this pill

1985 AD-That pill is ineffective, take this antibiotic

2000 AD- That antibiotic is artificial,  here, eat this root.

My first extended experience with ongoing struggles with numbness, tingling, and legs and feet falling asleep was during the fifteen months I spent in a Zen temple in Japan. Of course, this was much better than MS in that all I had to do to get rid of the problem was stand up and walk around a little bit. Would that MS were so easily resolvable. I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd love a bit of a respite (I'm having a very tingly day and stairs are killing me recently).

Actuall,. my legs have actually always fallen asleep kind of easily. What was worse during the sesshin (extended meditation retreat periods) was the pain--I used to say that I felt like someone was doing dental work on my knees. Still, I always knew if I just stood up and moved a bit, it would go away. Somebody please tell me the secret to get this MS to go away!

sho

PS for Julie: That was a funny story about the monkey. I went to Indonesia a couple times when I was living in Japan. I taught English for a couple years and when we had long vacations it was cheaper to go out of the country, even with the airfare, than to travel in country. There are many beautiful places in Bali. Sadly, I think my traveling days are over. I don't think I would be able to move after that many hours trapped in an economy class plane seat.

I am the world's biggest soccer fan!

Despite my verbosity, I am actually very shy. I do public speaking - because it scares me:) Same reason I am a roller coaster nut - it got me over (sort of) my fear of heights.

I love ghost hunting, but am unsure if I believe they exist...

I am not too bad an artist

I cannot live without a dog in my life

I'm double jointed in my fingers - all of them (makes for some interesting spasms)

I have few friends...many many acquiantances, but keep to my family much of the time

I married my true soul mate

I love this forum though I've had little time to come on lately!

*I'm 5'9", the shortest in my family.  The rest (including my mom) range from 6'-6'7".

*I worked at a burger king (doing drive through) my senior year of undergrad, and I actually kinda liked it!

*I've taken a polygraph before. (and passed!)

*I can stard on my head for >5 minutes.

*When I was 17, I totaled 2 trucks in 10 days (no one was hurt except me, I conked my head in the 1st one).

*The longest I've ever stayed in one apartment is 2 years.  (This is a great way to avoid things like cleaning behind the fridge--just move before it needs to be done!)

*I used tape to "hide" inspiring fortune cookie fortunes all over my office in grad school for the next person to find.

*I'm a generous tipper.

Well....this is more about one of my sons than me. I have 4 kids, aged 25, 22yo twins and an 11yo. The male twin gives me grey hairs....

He is one of those lads who flies through the air upside down on a BMX bike.

He is accident prone. He is the only person I have ever heard of who needed stitches on his eyelid from throwing one of those 20cent plastic soldiers (if you throw it in the air, and it lands on your eye, look out). At our hospital in my home town, he has 26 different sets of x-rays for his various self-inflicted injuries.
One of my personal favourites occured about ten years ago. he went down to the creek with his friend to build a tree house. Ten minutes later he rides back down the driveway on his bike, clutching his armpit. Silly lad had swung on a branch in the tree, and managed to impale his armpit on a nearby broken branch. The innards of his armpit were hanging out!
Another time, when I was about 8 months pregnant with the last one, he was at a friends house (same friend as the armpit incident actually). The motehr of that frined rolled up at my house looking all in a panic, and asked me to go to the dr with her. There was my son absolutely covered in blood, aftre his mate had accidently clobbered him in the skull with a 9 iron golf club. From that he got a compressed skull fracture and forty stitches.
He's had 6 concussions, 2 skull fractures, twice broken his collarbone, broken his nose, smashed his ankle to pieces, and had too many stitches to count.
Now he's 22.
He left Aus in March with plans to work in the UK for two years, and ride his BMX bike on every skate park he could find. But after 3 weeks decided it was too cold and headed for Europe, where he promptly fell in love with and American girl from Montana.

He's been in Montana now with her for two months, and just discovered that his 90 day visa waiver programme thing that he's on doesn't mean he can go to canada for a weekend and then start a new visa waiver programme, he has to actually leave the Nth American continent by 14 october.
So  lucky old me, because silly boy has run out of money, and I just got back from a travel agents $1500 worse off after booking him a flight home so he doesn't get arrested and end up in some immigration detention centre!

*sigh*

Kids!

Good bit of course is he's coming home,a nd he promised to get me a red ferarri wheelchair (if such a thing exists) if my legs give out. He reckons they go faster...

If anyone wants to see him, he's on a youtube clip ffrom 2 minutes 20 seconds to 4 minutes  10 seconds here:

youtube.com/watch?v=vc4JajNiW2w

just add the w w w bits I suppose....

I was the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow winner of my high school, and one of the top 20 in the state.  Wow, I must be super-housekeeper/seamstress/cook!  Well, I can cook, but I hardly ever do, I can sew, but I only do it if there's no other way to get something, like a costume, and my house is a disaster.

What's my secret?  It's a written, multiple-choice test.  Heck I don't even know if they do it anymore--this was over 35 years ago.  Maybe I was just ahead of my time--the homemaker of 2008 has a full-time job, a college degree or two, and uses a lot of convenience food and disposable stuff.  Maybe they were right after all :)

If I rub back and forth lightly on the top of my left hand (in the space between my tendons that attach to my middle finger and my ring finger) my muscle on the underside of my hand contracts just opposite (below) of my finger.   This started when I had my first episode in 2001.   I had the most terrible pain there for about 6 months just between those two tendons.   That is how I discovered this kooky phenomena....

ShadowSister your story reminded me of what my mother told me that I did as a very young girl.  She and my father bought my brother and I some baby ducks for Easter.  When they grew up, we were going to be taking them to a Farm that her cousin owned to release them in the family pond.

Being young and naive myself, my mother placed the baby ducks in the bathtub so they could swin around and do what little ducklings do. (As I saw it, all they did was poop) As my mother told it, she left the room while I watched the babies play and I decided they needed a bath.  Problem was, I cleaned them TOO WELL.  Dunking them up and down in the water to "rinse them off."  Without getting into anymore detail, I was told later that the ducklings were not going to be going to the "big pond after all."

I was not punished as I was too little to understand, but my Mother said that I was not left alone with little animals for many years to come.

I swear, I have never "hurt" an animal since.  When I got old enough to understand what I had done, my Mother told me that I cried for days for those little ducklings.

Heather
And now you may want to change from name from 'Earth Mother' to 'Duckling Killer'

let see if I can come up with a cute memory
Many years ago when my youngest daughter was 2 1/2 ( she is now 35) we had a baby kitten, about 3 months old. Well I heard the kitten crying and my Gina saying " All Clean Now" . I knew this wasn't a good thing, so as I went into the bathroom, there Gina was holding the kitty by his neck and dunking the poor thing up  & down in the toilet...  soap suds everywhere.. Gina looks up and says "Look Mom all clean now" It took awhile to get the poor kitty and Gina rinsed and dried and a whole bottle of shampoo. cleaned up. My Gina was so proud of herself, and told everyone what "a good job" she had done cleaning the kitty...
How I miss those days. Now Gina has her own children 2 boys and one daughter...( I am so happy they all take after their Mom..).

PS: Quix, thanks for a fun forum page... You Rock Lady...

Working as an EMT is quite amusing at times. This call that I went on with a supervisor was one I would have never wanted to miss.

It was very hot mid summer. My supervisor partner that day always kept the truck ice cold. I would always stick his gloves in front of the air vent so that they would be easy to slip on. My hands would always be cold once we got to the scene.

Imagine our surprise to walk into a business that rented movies to find that they also have tanning beds. Guess where our patient was. That is right. In the tanning bed. The door locked and they could not get her to the door. (My partner was male). So we jimmie the door finally and I go in to see what we have.

The patient has the bed closed completely so I beat on the top and call her name. No response. I lift the bed and call her name. No response. I did not see her breathing at all so I went back to the door and said to my partner. I didn't touch her but she might be dead.

We walk over to her and he is going to shake her by her shoulders. He is going for her shoulders and I decide to touch her leg. (remember my ice cold hands). It was so hilarious he look as if he was going to grab her breast and she jumps up. He was so embarrassed. I had to hold all my laughter until we were clear from the scene. But it was so funny. I touch her barely with my hand and she jumps up and he looks like he is going to feel her breasts.

After all the yelling and beating on the door and tanning bed. Maybe you just had to be there and have a sick sense of humor as I do. So anyway he closes the bed back down and says "We will wait outside while you get dressed". I am just about to die inside because I want to laugh so badly.

When we finished the call and get back to the truck, he looks at me and says, "This is our little secret and if you tell anyone, I will kill you". I laughed and made fun of him and I will never, ever let him forget that day. After that, every call we went on together he tried to get me back. It really wasn't on purpose but he didn't care.
