Solu-Medrol® (Methylprednisolone) and BAD menstruation...

It has been one week now since i have been off my 5 day iv dose of the Solu (for MS)... I have had some periods that have started on and off since. However, this morning I woke up with my panties soaked in blood ( which is abnormal even though i have previously been diagnosed with PCOS which resulted in them removing over 12 cysts..) Regardless, i have been filling up a pad every half hour or less and have been passing clots way larger then a quarter all day.

Im just wondering if this is a side affect of the steroid. or if this might just be a Gynecological issue?

Sorry to hear about your bleeding issues.  This article may help as it does list steroids as a possible cause of heavy, prolonged or abnormal menstrual bleeding.

Hi there & welcome to the MS Community,

I personally find that IVSM or Methylprednisolone has an effect on my mentruation. I will have more frequent & heavier periods for a while after the steroids & then my body just starts getting back to its normal only to have another lot of steroids. My periods can get closer together as well & it can take months for me to get into a normal routine again.

It took me years to pick up that it was the steroids doing this (I'm just so observant "eyes rolling") & I thought I was going through early menopause or something.

All this said though I do recommend you speak to your doctor about all of this because you could have something else going on & it's always better to be safe. Also when you see your doctor ask for some "Iron studies" to check where your Iron levels are at. The easiest way to read those results is to look at your Ferritin level.

Take Care,

Karry.
