Optic neuritis, is there always color lost & vision lost?

I had a follow up visit my local Neruo that recommended that I see the MS specialist,  which the MS specialist said mild MS. and no DMD'S yet.

After going over  my  symptoms  with my local Neruo  again, I told him I've another round of eye pain  ( my third ) without it affecting my vision and no color lost either.  and the eye Dr couldn't confirm ON.  I  do have an abnormal VEP. that is delayed.

So here's my question, can you have ON  without color or vision lost?

He seemed very concerned and has ordered a new brain MRI with Optic nerve, and wants it done on  a 3T.   My last brain  MRI was done in March on a 1.5T, and I never had the optic nerve MRI done before,   he did say after consulting with the MS specialist they want to put me on DMD'S , but they  just need  to see a few more clinical symptoms.    That's good & bad for me I guess.  Reading between the lines sounds like at this point it would be a fight with the insurance company for DMD approval.

Subject change;

UNCLE - UNCLE     I'm yelling UNCLE,   I give up   please send cooler weather to the mildwest. its in the 90'S humid and heat index is 105..

Thanks to all  --

You can have ON without any symptoms at all!  It's called subclinical ON and it's presence is proven both those people who have optic nerve atrophy and no clinical hystory of having had ON.

We are having highs in the low 80's and upper 70's with minimal humidity.  After our mini-heat wave last week we are back to perfect.  I vote for a summer convention in Portland.

Hi! Sorry about your eye pain. I know from experience that ON can be quite painful.

I had ON 3 times last year and once this year (confirmed and treated) so I just wanted to let you know that I can answer for sure that you do not have to lose color vision for it to be optic neuritis.

I did lose the color twice in one eye. It's not like everything was black and white. I wouldn't have even noticed if I hadn't covered one eye and looked at something and then the other and it was much less vivid in color.

Good luck with getting your dx & fingers crossed for cooler weather your way

Erin :)

This hot weather certainly is hell on the optic track isn't it. As soon as I get my results back (should be this coming week), I'll be able to tell you for certain if you can have no color loss with ON, as I have none, that is if I test positive for ON.

Good luck on beating this heat.

Ohhhh, Thanks for bumping this up John!

I've been wondering about eye issues the last couple days (one of those symptoms I've been ignoring lately LOL) It's hard to put my finger on what is exactly wrong. My eyes feel like they are straining. I'm having some photophobia. I have been getting minor pain behind my eyes, kind of like a headache, kind of like the back of my eyeballs are tired/sore. I have a hard time reading large blocks of print...the words start to swim. But, nothing too bad.

Do you mind me asking what your eye pain is like? I hope it is not too bad! And, I hope it goes away soon!

And I sure do hope the weather breaks for you!

A very timely bump. My right eye is blurry today, and I can only read out of the left. I read about ON, however, and I thought that couldn't be it, as reds look like the same colour saturation in both eyes. I have an optometrist appt for Mon, so I'll ask her at that time if there isn't a response from the group here. I'm hoping I just need new glasses all of a sudden!

ON is inflammation of the optic nerve, right?  I think you can have ON without color or vision loss, but I'm not sure.  I get most of my info on ON from this site -

Bleah, heat.  It's hot right now and they're calling for a heat index of 108 this weekend.  That's just too much for me!
