This is why there is the requirement for "dissemination in time" for a diagnosis of MS.  If this is a single event, it is not MS.  They need to watch your brother and look for new lesions.  ADEM doesn't generate new lesions 6 or 12 months down the road.  If he has another neurologic attack or new lesions more than a month after the current episode, that points to MS.  If he doesn't, that points to ADEM.

I am no doctor but I would wonder if this wasn't ADEM.  A friend recently came down with this.  It came on suddenly.  He was hospitalized for a week and given high powered steroids.  The swelling was so bad, we truly did not think he would walk again.  A week and a half later, he was left with slurred speech and walks with the aid of crutches.  They do expect nearly a full recovery for him.  Just a thought...

So sorry to hear he has MS.  But if you read about it, you will see that many advances have been made over the last 20 years to treat it with great success.  And there is a lot of research going on to try and find the cause, improve treatment and repair damage to the myelin.  It seems like each day there is more information coming on with regards to this disease!

The scary thing about MS is that each person is unique, and it's difficult for docs to predict how someone will do.  And of course, when someone is diagnosed with a chronic illness it can be very difficult to accept.  People go through many emotions - anger, denial, and acceptance can take a long time.

As you know, since you came to this site, it affects the whole family.  It seems like you are supportive of your brother since you are asking questions.  It can be hard to see a family member going through this, and feeling helpless. BUt you can help your brother a lot by listening, learning about the disease and supporting him as best you can.

With relapsing/remitting MS, symptoms can come and go.  So I'm glad to hear your brother is walking again.  Did the doctors say what kind of MS he has?

There are also links called "health pages" at the top R of this page.  That will give you more information.  Are you able to talk with others in your family about all of this?

Please keep us posted as to how your brother is doing.  There are many supportive people on this site who are willing to share a lot of information.

Best to you and your family!
PS - If I may be noisy....how old are you?

Welcome - but sorry you are here and sorry to hear about what is going on with your brother.

To answer your question - You haven't given a lot of information but lesions in the brain can be from other things as well.  It sounds like the symptoms hit your brother really fast - not sure this is so usual in MS.

Here is a link to the national MS society for lots of info regarding this disease.

There are lots of great people here to offer support, and I'm glad you are seeking information.  It can be very scary when someone close to you is going through this!  Is your brother working with a neurologist?  Has he already been diagnosed?  Usually a diagnosis of MS takes time and lots of testing to rule out other diseases that mimic it.

Please let us know how things go for you and your brother.

Best to both of you!
