Things just took a turn toward the unexplainable

Visual disturbance or hallucination?

Last night I was awakened with a startling noise, upon opening my eyes I was blasted with what seemed to be a vivid, bright, full color vision that faded to grey from the center out to the periphery within seconds. This didn't just happen once, but twice. A little while later, it happened again (wind and scared rabbit thumping), but this time I saw what looked like Christmas lights- orange and green - that again faded out within seconds.

I've heard of losing color vision in the light, but not gaining color vision in the dark. Any clues? I was burning a pretty good fever last night, but didn't measure. Going by how hot I felt, it was probably in the 100.5 to 101 range.

Yes! A few weeks back, I found out if I turn my head quickly to the side after dark, I can create a lightening show. No psychedelics needed.

You piqued my curiosity with optic neuritis.

I've had problems with blurred and double vision, which could be ON.

Back in late 2006, I had a number of times when trying to fall asleep where I would have what I call the electric light show. My eyes were closed, but I was seeing blobs of color going across my "vision field" and even bolts of color. I commented about this to a co-worker, who said I should have my eyes checked immediately for any retinal damage. I did and everything was fine.

In the past month this has been happening again. It can last as long as 5 to 10 minutes.

All this without any psychotropics!

They saw no lesions in my brain at all. They had 2mm slices in the brain stem and auditory canal areas and 5mm slices everywhere else. It was done with and without contrast. The order was for brain and AIC with and without contrast, and was done with a 3T. The images were very clean. He did see an enlarged vestibular loop on the right side and is questioning if this is compressing on cranial nerves. I have yet to ask him which blood vessel is involved. He does believe there is adequate room in the area for it to expand elsewhere. But this is always in the back of his mind when trying to sort out all of the issues.

The neuros have told me the problems are so widespread, they can't localize anything. And with no lesions, it complicates matters even more.

I do also have pain behind the eyes again today and a feeling of pressure behind the eyes and in the forehead. The blurring vision cleared up to almost nil over the last week, and still there isn't much blurring today. It did have a habit of getting worse and more frequent after showering or heat exposure. The opthamologist saw nothing and the visual field test was normal. My appointment with the neuro-opthal is Nov. 2.

Just as an "off the wall" question, when they did your MRI, did they see any lesions on or near the pons or hypothalamus?  I'd be interested in knowing if there were any infratentorial lesions.
The reason I'm asking, is that Fever Of Unknown Origin, has a rule-out related to the hypothalamus.  The hypothalamus is the bodies thermostat.  It is actual responsible for setting the body's temperature. A lesion on or near the hypothalamus could cause fluctuation body temperature.

Dr. Google has provided an explanation: hypnogogic or hypnopompic hallucination. Brightly colored phosphenes can be experienced when startled by sound during sleep. And there ya go!

Anyone else have these strange phenomenon while falling asleep or waking up? In the past it's included lightening and thunder inside my head, feelings of static, feeling of being suffocated and crushed, and popping and buzzing inside my head. It's part of that thing called sleep paralysis and usually happens to me during these long spells of fatigue and neurological weirdness.

And this is probably why I haven't heard back from the neuro's office yet.

It has me a wittle freaked out. I just left a message at the neuro, and also reported the hearing loss to him. I'm waiting to hear back on whether he wants to see me or not. I don't hold out any hope he'll do anything about it.

man, that would have been terrifying!

in my opinion, i'd be investigating optic neuritis...perhaps the fever made this symptom flare for you?

good luck and keep us posted.
