Understanding Lumber Punctures

I collapsed again on the 25th september and had to undergo yet anouther lumber puncture ( 3rd time OUCH !!!!! ) still in limbo land,  the test they asked for was to look for a particular kind of protein called oligoclonal bands.  the results has shown the presence of these bands in both in the fluid from my spine and also in the blood.  what i want to know is should this protein be found in both or just be found in the spinal fluid? and would this indecate MS or not.  I was in hospital recovering for 5 weeks and still undergoing physio and now need a wheelchair to support me outside.

Feeling lost and confused

as far as i know, if you have the exact same pattern of obands in the csf as you do in the serum, it indicates lupus, as well as a few other diseases. in order for it to indicate ms, it either has to be only in the csf, or have at least 2 extra bands than the serum.

i'm new here and this was my vewy first post :)

Hi there,

I'm glad you are out of the hospital. Wobbs is right, where MS is concerned, the O-bands would be in the CSF and not the blood serum.  We do have a good chart on the health pages. If it's in the CSF and not the blood serum, they can say that the banding is coming from your central nervous system because it's not in both.  Does that make any sense?

So what else? What did they Dr. say about this? If it were me, I'd have questions, like, what types of diseases show banding in serum and CSF? What has been ruled out? Why am I collapsing? I'm in a wheelchair, and I want to know what is causing this.

Are you feeling any better at all? Keep us posted. When do you follow up w/the Dr?

Hope you get back to us.

oh wow.. what did they say at the hospital...any ideas?  I'm in limboland too and from what I hear...the O bands with MS should only be in the spinal fluid..not both blood and csf.. so I'm not sure what that means..

have you had a MRI yet?  brain and spine?  did they show anything...

check out our Health Pages on the link top right side of this page, they might give you some info... until someone with more experience can help here..

take care and keep us updated...ok
