neuro quote of the day

I was called from a cancellation list to go see a neuro today. I had read online that he was not well liked, but I thought I was ready. The entire appt took between 5 and 10 minutes. He asked my husband and I some questions, but completely negated our answers. He asked about double vision, then when I said yes, in my right eye, he told me if I did have it I wouldn't be able to see him. Huh?

My husband mentioned me falling and I started to lift my skirt to show him the bruises on my leg from last week but he turned his chair away to look at my chart so I didn't bother.

We knew it was a complete waste of time when he glanced at the radiology report and said that I had UBO's, then followed that with
"A UBO is like a UFO. Have you ever heard of anyone being hurt by a UFO?". He didn't look at the disc.

He assured us there was no neurological problem, but said he would do a neuro exam anyway. I walked as fast as possible up and down the hall, squeezed his hands, stuck out my tongue and watched his moving finger.
The exam for sensation consisted of him rapidly running his hands down the outside of my arms and legs and asking me if I could feel it.

He said he didn't see a problem, but he hadn't had a chance to look at any of my reports so he would review them and let my Dr know if he had any concerns.

That man should feel so guilty when he collects his paycheck.

Your experience was so bad that it bordered on the absurd and I could not help laughing, waiting for the next faux pas. Not that it was really funny, it was unimaginable.

I would have been furious if that had happened to me. Wasting my time, money and showing absolutely no concern for me. Glad DH was there to witness it all.

If it helps at all, when I was in my 20's and still had my looks (funny how nature drops the level of attractiveness once we're past child bearing years), I went to a GP for a sinus infection. He wanted to give me a breast exam!!! On my ginormous A cup breasts. You know what I said!

Wish there was really a way to report these incompetent or fraudulent doctors. I guess the next best thing would be to let your doctor know how the appointment went and recommend that no referrals are made to that neuro.

And yes, you feelings are validated.

Helen, rave and rage as much as you like! You've been done dirty.

What a jerk. Avoid that guy like the plague, and if there's a way to rate him online, give him a big fat zero. An arrogant, know-it-all bas!ard.

We're here to help restore your tattered spirits. Stay with us.

From feeling "terribly small" as Michelle put it, this forum once again has given me a tremendous lift.
Wobbly, this WAS a neurologist from New Westminster BC!
The MS forum has people from all over the world. I think we went to the same guy! On Columbia Street?

I feel validated now. Thanks

oh wow,

do i ever feel for you helen!!

i just went through a similar, but perhaps not quite that bad, situation.

saw my first neuro on monday and was told i have back issues, a potential ear infection and anxiety.  makes one feel terribly small, doesn't it?  (nonetheless she ordered an mri of brain and spine as there was one thing concerning to her).

i am fortunate enough to have a doctor who cares and believes.

i hope you can regroup and find another direction to persue in advocation of what you know very clearly to be going on inside of your body.

tons of empathy on this one!!!

Hi there... I've been to a couple of Neuro like that one.. I'm from BC and went to see one in New west... boy oh boy does he sound like him.

I saw this Neuro for a few years on and off, when my symptoms would flare up or get worse.  He sounded like this fellow you saw.

after a few MRI and years, he said he thinks it's MS but wants to send me to a specialist...which got me the Dx..

hang in there and regroup like you said.

take care

I know I'll be just fine. I think now I just need to absorb this, back off and regroup.

I am very grateful that my husband was there to witness it, though. He said he'd never suspected someone could be told their neuro exam was fine BEFORE the exam!

Permission to get much angrier!  I find it hard to believe that you have been so short changed...and I am not talking about money or his paycheque. It is an insult to you as a person to see a professional who does not bother to give you the time, attention of proper neurological examination that you deserve.

I suggest that you fInd another neuro who is prepared to listen to you and take you seriously. I am sooooooo sorry that you have wasted your time and I know that there are many others on the forum who will be able to empathise more as they have had similar experiencess. I know that I am lucky and have a compassionate and professional neuro who I have complete faith in and who knows his stuff. It appears they are in short supply

I expect that your husband felt quite angry and frustrated for you and I hope that together you are able to decide the best way forward.

With love

Ah, the dreaded UBOs.  By themselves, they are meaningless to a neuro.  But in my opinion, punctate hyperintensities are a sign of some sort of disease activity.  Whether it's transient ischemia, or axon demyelination, it's not normal.

Sorry about your bad experience.  There's a lot of bad neuros  out there!
