Balance affected with walking and sitting on a bed

What can be wrong with my husband who has a problem with balance while walking and sometimes with sitting. It is like someone is pulling him backwards while sitting and when he is walking sometimes falls forward.  He has recently been in the hospital and his diagnosis was infection from his kidneys.  They gave him Ciproflaxin for the infection.  He still has trouble walking, it's like his legs are really heavy and still has the wobbles. He just went to his doctor who said that he is doing just fine, but he isn't.  Can you help us?

Did he have the problems before taking the cipro or after?

I also want to stress that not all vertigo is simply dizziness...the fact that your husband has the feeling that he is being pulled backward by something that could be explained as the sensation of a giant magnet pulling him to the floor, suggests vertigo...it depends on the part of the inner ear that is being affected.

Systemic lupus erythematosus has several symptoms and for starters I would check out this link to see how many of these symptoms match...

http://www.medicinenet.com/systemic_lupus/article.htm

As for IgA nephropathy, this sounds more like what you had explained to me...

IgA nephropathy usually doesn't cause symptoms in the early stages. The disease can go unnoticed for decades and is sometimes first suspected when routine tests reveal protein and microscopic red blood cells in your urine.

The first visible sign is often cola- or tea-colored urine — the result of urinary blood that you can see.

Signs and symptoms of IgA nephropathy include:

    * Repeated episodes of cola-colored or tea-colored urine, usually during or following an upper respiratory infection
    * Pain in your side(s)
    * Foam in the toilet water from protein in your urine
    * Swelling (edema) in your hands and feet
    * High blood pressure
    * Low-grade fever

Now these are the early symptoms...so you may want to check out http://www.igan.ca/id37.htm for more detailed information...this is personally what I would perhaps suggest for testing at your next appointment with your personal physician as it can easily go by undetected...

I hope this helps you in some way! :)  Keep me posted!

Thank you for your response. My husband doesn't have dizziness, it is more a balance problem.  He feels like he is going to fall over while walking and sometimes while sitting, he feels that he is being pulled backwards, involuntarily.  His urine was really dark, I don't know about tea colored. While at the ER, before being admitted to the hospital, he went over almost on his head, while in the restroom.  If he hadn't grabbed the rail while falling and crying out for help, he would have fallen in the floor. What are the symtoms of both diseases that you wrote about (IgA nephropathy or  Systemic lupus erythematosus)? He does have Diabetes, High Blood Pressure and blocked arteries in his heart.

Sorry...I should have posted this earlier...but what exactly lead them to believe that it was a kidney infection?  Was his urine sort of tea colored by any chance?  The reason I am asking is because there is a possibility that it may actually be a rare condition known as IgA nephropathy or even Systemic lupus erythematosus...both of these are believed to be an autoimmune disorder that involve the kidneys.  The reason I am bringing up the possibility of him having an autoimmune disorder is because of the vertigo...there is a condition called Autoimmune inner ear disease which this condition is more common in people who have other autoimmune diseases.  Has your husband noticed any hearing loss?

Hi Lucy194...does your husband have a feeling of motion when he is stationary?  If he does, have him checked for a condition known as Vertigo...this is an inner ear complication.
