cronic headache +dizziness+ lightheaded

For over a year i have been experiencing chronic headaches (5-6 days a week sometimes more). Along with this comes an extreme lightheadedness and dizziness. I feel as though i am drunk or like i have been holding my breath or hyperventilating. My ears are constantly ringing and can't get relieve from sleep. I wake up with these headaches and they last all day long.  I don't trust myself to drive anymore feeling this way and no one is helping. My family doctor just sent me to a neurologist who proscribed me anti-depressives after a 10 minute interview. I am at a loss and over the counter pain revilers are no longer helping.

I would be very grateful if anyone had some ideas of what this might be or any advise about how i can make these headaches go away.

Hi, Thank you for your question. If you’re all the reports came back normal then it could be panic or anxiety disorder that you have faced during last event and currently experiencing. Cause of such panic disorder mostly remain unknown but in this disorder you may feel symptoms like shortness of breath, feeling of choking, pain in the chest, nausea, stomach ache, feeling dizzy, tingling or numbness, chills or hot flashes, bounding heartbeat or fast heart rate, sweating, shaking etc. even without any underlying disorder. This disorder needs to be thoroughly assessed by a psychiatrist first since this can occur repeatedly and without warning.  Treatments may include psychological and drug treatments, and depend upon extent of severity of symptoms. Most commonly psychological treatment tried is counseling, relaxation techniques and sometimes cognitive behavior therapy. ************** depends upon treating the underlying depressive illness through anti-anxiety or anti-depressant medicines.  In addition, try to rest in a dark & quiet room, meditate, have a balanced diet, regularly exercise and avoid taking unnecessary non prescription drugs to avoid recurrence of symptoms. Hope this helps!!

Thank you for the kind word. I haven't had any accidents or falls lately or in the last years that i can recall. I did have a baby on June 30th 2008 and we used an epidural. At the time there were no complications. The headaches started about 8 months after that. I was on a new kind of birth control on feb. last year and i thought these were just some side effects. so i stopped taking them. Well it has not stopped. I have looked for another Neurologist and i will be making an appointment soon.

I am of course stressed since i have a soon to be 2 year old on my hands. I am able to get some space from her from time to time and even then i still get these headaches and dizziness. I don't know if this can all be just stress or anxiety...

I feel terrible for you, and you should not have been treated as you were by the neurologist.

You may want to consider seeing another neurologist (getting a 2nd opinion).

As Selma said, anxiety can be blamed far too easily for anything.

Best of luck to you,
