pain & numbness

I have been suffering from severe pain in lower back, buttock, hip and groin. I also have numbness in the lower abdomen, groin and upper inner thigh. I had an MRI that showed something so they called me back for another with contrast. The report said that it showed inflammation where the spinal cord opens in the L2 area. I have been refered to a neuro surg. What might they be looking for. What would be causing this?

Hi,

Thanks for writing in.
Inflammation of the spinal cord can occur following trauma or can be transverse myelitis. Transverse myelitis is a neurological syndrome caused by inflammation of the spinal cord. The common presenting symptoms are limb weakness, sensory disturbances, back pain and bladder and bowel disturbances. It can be caused by infections, autoimmune disease or vaccinations. The treatment is mainly steroids.
