Im not completely sure, have you ever thought it could also be Hypermobility syndrom? I was diagnosed with it over a year ago when my hips clicked and i suffered from pains when i walked far, and i was only 16 at the time! It can be worse in some people than others. It means your joints are extra stretchy like your double jointed. Check it out on google theres a few tests you can do at home to see if you have it
no idea, i could be completely wrong, it may not be this but its worth a shot

I was a ballet dancer for years and my knees would pop/crack going up and down stairs - I have asked doctors/nutionalists/fitness experts and everyone suggests an exercise doing leg lifts with weights - there is a weight machine for this - not sure of the name - you are in a sitting position and a padded bar is in front of your ankles and you lift - there is a weight adjustment - the more reps and less weight the better.
