Hip bursitis

I am an athlete and have been taking it easy for months due to my hip bursitis. I am eager to get back to working out as this injury has taken a toll on my sports performance, however my hip just refuses to heal. I have taken tons of advil, stayed off my feet as much as possible, and avoided exercises that aggravate my hip, but nothing is really making a difference. How do I find an effective way to heal my hip for good?

How does a doctor determine if tronchanteric bursitis is the infectious form? Is there a way to tell without withdrawing fluid from the bursa?

Also, I have had 3 mos of chronic hip bursitis. Now going to a very good chiropractor. He told me to stop all hip and back stretching until bursitis pain has subsided, as stretching will further irritate inflamed joints, nerves, etc. This makes sense to me as any kind of post-hot shower, gentle stretching of the hip seems to result in greater bursitis pain a couple of days later. But...his advice seems contrary to everything I read that seems to say stretching of I-band, hip flexors, extenders, etc are absolutely necessary to help resolve hip bursitis! Please help! Need clarification?

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello!

The treatment of any bursitis depends on whether or not it is infected or not. If it is not infected you can try cortisone injection.

Your hip bursitis can often benefit by weight reduction, stretching exercises, and also by wearing proper footwear for all of your activities.

Infected bursitis (rare in the hip) requires further evaluation. Talk with an orthopedician.

Take care!
