Knee pain, possible ligament tear

I recently sustained a knee injury when digging out two large bushes in my yard. There was no sudden pain, it came on after a few days and gradually got worse.

I saw the orthopedic surgeon yesterday - he is the one who thought the injury was brought on by the gardening. However since I am an avid runner and run a lot of hills, this could also have contributed as my leg sometimes "gives"

I am scheduled for an MRI to see if there is a ligament tear. Hopefully not!

Is it always necessary to have surgery for a ligament tear?  I'm in the middle of training for a half marathon.

Thanks!

Thanks so much!  You have eased my mind.  I'm thinking that the tear (if it is one) can't be that bad as I can still walk (although it is painful)

I had hip surgery last January and wrist surgery last year and would sure like to avoid yet another surgery.

Thanks again!

Hello!

Not at all necessary to have surgery as you have to:

1) Confirm having ligament tear by an MRI

2) Grade the tear

3) Conservative treatment should be started and if it fails then you may need surgery and also for Grade III injuries of ligament tears.

Take care!
