Rib Removal?

I have a loose rib, and it's been causing me sooo much pain for over a year now. I am so fusterated, I just want to get it taken out! Has anybody had a rib removed? Was it severely painful? Does it feel different? How long is the recovery time? THANKS!

Hi Terry1215
I had surgery for lung cancer this year and I had 2 ribs removed.  I am trying to get use to it but there is  so much pain from the surgery.  I am currently going getting chemo, but I am not sure if the pain is from the missing ribs or the chemo....  after running across your posting regarding your surgery.  I found it very helpful to know that there is pain involve with this surgery.  However I did not get any reconstruction surgey as of now I have loose skin under the left arm and in my back and chest area.  The best out of this is I am cancer free and hopefully pain free one day.

Thank again

On July 15th 2014 I will be having surgery to remove a tumor about the size of a tennis ball from my 5th and 6th rib, along with surrounding tissue and possibly part of my chest wall.  A plastic surgeon will be on stand by to remove tissue from another place in my body to help fill up this hole.  The doctor said he was putting mesh to hold me together.  Has anyone had this done.  What kind of recovery time?  How long of a hospital stay?

Hi! Welcome to MedHelp! I am the Orthopedic Community Leader for MedHelp. I am fairly new to this site and am trying to catch up and see if I can help anyone with additional information. I am a Orthopedic First Assistant. I am sorry to hear of your predicament. There is a Titanium Rib made by Synthes, unfortunately it has thus far only been approved for TIS (Thoracic Insufficiency Syndrome) by the FDA. It is called VEPTR (Vertical Expandable Prosthetic Titanium Rib). It functions by connecting the ribs vertically in the empty space between the ribs. You can see pictures if you go to the FDA site (just Google FDA, go to site, click on Medical Implants, search for VEPTR). Sorry I don't have better news, maybe they will expand this device usage soon. Best wishes! jd1963
