Softball Swelling Injury - Treatment?

While running to 1st base last night, the short stop threw the ball to first where the softball hit me about 3-4 inches above my ankle bone...on the inside of my leg.  The injured area swelled immediately.  I stayed in the game and next hit I ran to 3rd base where the injured area had swollen about 4X as large as the initial impact.  I hobbled out of game but was able to put weight on my foot and was able to move my ankle in all directions without direct pain.  I elevated my leg and iced on and off for about 2 hours before going to bed.  I have pretty severe throbbing and this morning is difficult to put pressure on my foot.  The pain is not in my ankle bone...it feels as though my skin is going to pop open from the swelling.  The swelling has come down quite a bit but there is still major swelling.

Today do I continue with ice packs and then switch to heat?  Does this sound like this injury could be more than just a major knot/bruise combo?  Trying to figure out if  doctor's visit is necessary.  Thanks!

Hi helza, i'd go to an orthopedic doctor right away if you can get in or just go to the emergency room to rule out if broke or not.  good luck  i know all about softball injuries there a bummer.  Phill

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello!

Apply ice packs and go for an X-ray to rule out any bony involvement.

I would also suggest you to wear ankle supports in a wrap, brace or crepe bandage to limit movements and as a support to the ankle.

Take care!
