broken fibula not healing

hi there,

So, I ended up with a spiral displaced fracture of the fibula (mid shaft) as a result of a skiing accident on january 17th, 2010.  Was put into a fiberglass cast for a week and a half until I saw the OS, he had a look at the xray and said he thought it would heal on it's own without surgery and put me in a walking boot with no weight bearing for the next three weeks.  At 4 weeks post break I went back in for follow up with the OS, he didn't do another xray but told me to start weight bearing and to take the boot off in two weeks and walk on it.  Which put me at about 6 weeks post break, with two weeks left before i was to see him again.  I went in at 8 weeks and he did an xray (the first since the break) and proceeded to tell me that it wasn't healed by any stretch of the imagination and to put the boot back on until i saw him again at 12 weeks.  My physiotherapist wanted another xray in between that time to see if we could start working on it, it showed no change.  So at twelve weeks when i saw him again, he looked at the ten week xray and said it was basically the same as last time and wasn't healing very well.  The xray technician said it looked like a couple week old break not three months plus.  Should we not be doing something about it other than saying now to take the boot off again, walk on it and go back to work if i feel comfortable in a few weeks?  It still hurts and feels very uncomfortable if I'm on it for very long.  I've attached the xray from two weeks ago, it doesn't look right to me but I'm not a doctor, I don't know if I'm getting proper advice or treatment.
any advice?

Hi,my husband had motocycle wreck 9-9-2010 which broke his tibia and fibula. Had surgery on 10th where they place rod with screws and plate with screws. He had no cast just bandage and bed for 3 months. Then bone stimulator and walker since. We went to doctor today to find still no healing at all with the fibula but ankle is healed. They believe now the best way to start the healing is more surgery to take this rod out, replace with larger and place metal plates attached with screws and then do bone graft. This is 3 more months of bed rest and hopefully within 6 months it will heal. He does smoke and they say that is a BIG problem in healing of any bone but this brake is one of the worst you can have. How was the bone graft for you? He is almost 60 years old and is really worried this will always give him problems but he's also worried about his job and our 6 grandkids we raise so the faster he's better we'll be better. The doctor will not do the surgery until he stops smoking so we are stopping on Valentine's Day for each other. Wish us luck

Had same type of break to fibula years ago.Slowly healed on its own . Took almost a year. Looked very similar to yours in x-ray. Doctors don't believe the fibula needs to be addressed often because it is a non weight bearing bone unless it is a distal fracture. What kind of discomfort or pain are you having?

I too broke my fibula(as well as my tibia) I had surgery to fix my tibia (ORIF w/IM nail) my fibula didn't heal so I had a bone graft dne 5 months after original injury w/ success. My break was closer to the ankle than yours was so I don't know if that makes a difference in doing a graft but wouldn't hurt to ask. Sounds like a terrible surgery but it really wasn't that bad. Good luck!
