Hi Dr. Goodman. We have been told that our 8 month old daughter has a "multiseptated cystic lesion" on/near her left ovary. She was diagnosed with a UTI when she was 6 1/2 months old. When we did a follow up visit after her antibiotic treatment (Septra) they did another urine test and it still showed an infection. They requested an ultrasound to test for bladder reflux. It was done July 10 and they noted that "there is thickening of the ureters, and the left ovary is not seen, adjacent to the bladder base on the left side, there appears to be a multilocular cystic structure measuring 2.4cm x 1.1cm, of unclear etiology and may represent cysts w/in the left ovary however possibility of cystic mass can't be excluded". After that they sent us to a Urologist and requested another ultrasound to examine the mass. They did a VCUG for reflux (which she has stage II reflux and is on a low dose of Septra until she grows out of it), and at the second ultrasound on July 22 they noted this: "multiseptated cystic lesion within the left adnexa measuring 3 x 1.4cm. Whether this is arising from the left ovary or is paraovarian/peritubal is unlcear due to patient's age and small size of the ovaries." She hasn't had any other issues besides jaundice as a newborn and gastro. reflux (not diagnosed or on meds, just always spitting up).
Doctors won't give us any suggestions of what this may or may not be. They keep sending us to other professionals. We are scheduled for a CT on July 31 and we are seeing a pediatric surgeon on August 18th (per request of radiologist). We have no idea what all of these terms mean and how serious this is. Does the growth of this mass seem fast to you? If you have any idea about what this is, advice, or different avenues we should be looking at, PLEASE HELP! We are extremely worried and upset about all of this. Our worst fear is that our beautiful baby has ovarian cancer at 8 months old, is this even possible?
