Where was the 6 cm mass? I agree with the others, it could mean that an gyn/onc is the best surgeon to have, even if it's a benign mass. I applaud the internist for being cautious. You're in great hands.
I agree wtih marie3B. It doesn't mean the worst, but if the worst should happen you would definitely want the gyn/onc there. They are specially trained to deal with gyn cancers and it is far better to have surgery done by a gyn/onc if there is the slightest possibility of cancer. My SIL had her surgery done by my gyn/onc, and her masses were benign. She also recovered well from the surgery because of his skill. Best wishes, Chris P
Being refferred to a gyn/onc does not mean the worst is inevitable. Gyn/oncs have usually so much more surgical skills and produce better chances of success post surgery. I credit being alive today to my gyn/onc. You are in my prayers. My neighbor's daughter had a large mass removed by my gyn/onc. Hers was benign and because of the great skills of the gyn/onc she bounced back from surgery fast. Marie
