Today I will call my gynoc for path report on laproscopic hysterectomy salpingo oopherectomy. My sister and one of my daughters has breast cancer before age 45.  A  cousin and a great aunt also had breast cancer but don't know ages.  My sister was negative for BRCA I & II mutation, but I am genetic cytotechnologist so know there may be nuances to this.   I am almost 73.  Only previous surgery was tubal ligation 30ish years ago.  Went to internist in late January 2014 with right flank pain/discomfort.  I thought maybe appendicitis or gallbladder.   At this age lots of parts are achy and it's difficult to pinpoint.  My internist said hernia and ordered a CT of pelvis.  This showed inguinal bilateral hernias PLUS enlarged right ovary.  Followed with ultrasound.  Hernias and 3.5 cm mass on right ovary.  To gynocological oncologist. Planned robotic laproscopic surgery.  Sent to surgical ooncologist to see if hernia repair advised at same time.  He said "no".  Back to internist to approve choices so far. Approved and CA125 done.  Result 11.8  which I thought was good till I learned that some of the potential diagnosis do not raise CA125!  Surgery a week ago today.  Frozen section = borderline tumor.  Doc says biopsied adjacent areas, but expects tumor diagnosis to remain borderline with no othersites.  Anticipates no chemo needed.  I don't know if he also removed appendix. I have read the stories here, but still don't know what borderline means.  What questions should I ask of gyn oc?  What would you recommend from here?  BTW, the original pain is still here!

The pain could be from the surgery. My doctor showed me there is a major nerve they have to cut through. She says that is why I still have pain. I guess you have to ask your doctor about the appendix. If they did not take the omentum the lining of your organs they probably did not take the appendix. If they did not take the omentum they are not thinking the Cancer will manifest. You know if they take the omentum because they do not do the robot but a big incision. Borderline is good. It mean it could be Cancer but if they are not doing chemo they think you will not have a real issue with Ovarian. It is much better than a grading of stage 1 - 4. No chemo is also good. The chemo is rough I have had 14 rounds so far. The low CA 125 is also good.  Mine creeps up every time the Cancer is back. For many people Ovarian Cancer is a constant battle. I am 51 and will have chemo for the rest of my life which I hope will be ten more years. Borderline can seem scary. Sometimes I think the possibility of Cancer can be scarier than knowing you have it. It is the unknown. The main thing is to have check ups and hope for the best. Unlike Breast Cancer Ovarian ususally stays local. Ask if they found any acsites fluid it does not sound like they did this is also good. Plus with the pain that surgery takes awhile to get over.
