My mom

They are saying my momhas Stage III ovca, large amounts ascites also. Will they do surgery with the ascites? Surgery or no surgery she is 74 years old its so hard for us to decide. Sounds like our only alternative for giving her more time though. But how is quality of life after surgery and what about chemo? SOOOOO SCARY

I also had ascities and they were drained prior to surgery. My surgery went well as will your Mom's. I do agree with Jane, you should meet with her gyn/onc prior to surgery and ask these questions. Sending positive thoughts your way.

Lillian,
As far as doing surgery with the ascities, I am not sure, but it can be drained if they think that it needs to be. Also chemo can reduce the amount.
The quality of her life after surgery should not be bad, esp if she is in pretty good health. Plus the chemo will help some too. Both of these will reduce the amount of cancer in her body and she should feel a little better.
I know it is all very scary. But please remember to jot down all of these questions and ask her Dr. He should be able to put your mind at ease.

How is your Mom's health overall.   If she has no other health problems, it is reasonable to have surgery and then chemo.  I agree with Jane .. you should meet with her gyn/onc prior to surgery and ask these questions.

Good luck and God Bless ..

Hi Lillian,
I'm so sorry for your Mom's diagnosis, and I understand how hard the decisions facing her are.
I really think that you, and she have to make an appointment with her oncologist, and go over her case, I'm sure he has a plan of treatment in mind. Write down all the questions before you go, and then write down what the doctor says. It's so much information, and hard to remember everything when you leave.
You should also get copies of her tests, you can look them over at home.
Perhaps another family member can go with you and Mom for support.

Best wishes for Mom and let us know what the decision is.
Jane
