8 cm cyst on right ovary

I am posting this, I believe in the correct forum. I had done google, and brought me to the ovarian cancer section, and not knowing where I was posting ended up posting there and I didn't even know there was a specific area for cysts, so here we go.

Hi, I am new here and hope someone could answer some questions because I do not know what to do at this point. Needless to say I am very worried and scared.
I will start with a bit of medical history....
I am 30 years old, mother of 4 (ages ranging between 3 to 12)
I had a partial hysterectomy in 2006, it was done vaginally, and the dr that performed it also made some repairs of a cystocele, and rectocele as well.
As far as I can remember I have never had any problems with cysts.
I had been having pains and kept going to the dr. over and over again, mainly abdominal pains. Every time, their answer was, youre constipated, or your stressed out, or is just heartburn. Finally I had a bad bad pain it felt like horrible menstrual cramps and considering I have no period, or an uterus for that matter, I got worried, the next morning I was at the dr.
She gave me a referral for a gastroenterologist (who performed a colonoscopy) and diagnosed me with IBS.
My Family doctor also ordered a CT. I went in for the CT, and following I will type exactly what they found (since I have a copy of the radiology report)

CT was done on 12 Jan 2009

The pelvis is remarkable for a complex cystic lesion lying anterior to the rectum measuring 5.5 x 7.3 x 6.1
Multiple cysts are seen within this lesion. the left ovary has an unremarkable appearance.

7.4 cm complex cystic lesion in the low pelvis. if this represents the right ovary, it is pathological by size.Ultrasound follow-up to further characterize may be of benefit.

Once this results came in and my family doctor got them, she ordered and ultrasound, and a trans vaginal ultrasound. I will type exactly what they found (since I have a copy of the radiology report).

Ultrasound was done on 04 March 2009

The left ovary has normal echotexture and measures aprox. 2.13 x 1.64 x 2.14 cm . Physiological follicles are seen withing the left ovary. left ovarian or paraovarian simple cyst is noted measuring 0.73 cm.

The right ovary is not particularly well characterized. In the right adnexa, there is a complex, mostly solid, but partially cystic mass measuring approx 8.18 x 5.24 x 5.55 cm. Some blood flow is noted within this lesion. Normal ovarian tissue cannot be discriminated. No free fluid is present.

Right adnexal, likely ovarian, mass measuring approx 8.18 cm. pathological by size. Would consider tissue diagnosis.

Once my family doctor got all the results, she gave me an ob/gyn referral. I went to see Gyn on 10 March 2009.
She ordered a CA-125 and another test... (I believe it is CAE or COE or something along those lines) Both came back normal.
When I saw her on 10 March 2009 she wanted to do surgery to get it out. Her only opening was on 24 March 2009. I tried to tell her we had already sold our home, and our belongings were packed and ready to go (we are military) and were right in the middle of moving to another state. With 4 kids there was no way I could have stayed behind and had the surgery plus I had no family there to help me or that I could stay with during this time). I went ahead and moved. I got down here (Georgia), saw a new doctor who has all my medical records, plus I hand carried copies of all the results as well, and a disc containing all the images from my tests.
This new doctor gave me a referral to another OB/gyn. I went to the appt this morning. He said he preferred not to do surgery since I am no symptomatic (spelling?) and gave me birth control pills to take for the next 30 days (birth control he gave me is Femcon Fe  0.4 mg). He said to come back in 30 days to schedule an ultrasound, and then come back for ultrasound to see if it shrunk.  And now I am here... clueless and confused, and worried sick.

I don't know if I should try and get a second opinion, or if I should take the birth control pills or not. Considering is mainly a solid mass... is this thing going to shrink?
Unless I pick up my 3 yr old usually I don't even notice it. I do get pains here and there but they pass rather quickly. If I move wrong I feel like a pull on my lower pelvic area. The only one weird thing Ive noticed is when I am standing up straight right in my pelvic area, where my pelvis meets my tight (around the panty line) seems to be more swollen than the left side. As for pain I don't feel any, discomfort yes like a burning and pulling as I stated earlier, but only if I twist wrong or something. And ever since they told me it was there I am more aware of it and "feel" it there. I never did before.  Any help, advice even comfort is welcome at this point.
Thank you so much in advance

I have been feeling "not myself" for quite sometime now. Them finding the cyst was a good thing, and my doctor said they found it by chance. I have had bad constipation problems and abdominal pains on and off for about 6 years. So, I had gone in thinking it was that. When I first went in, it was because I had been up all night the night before with pains. I swore they felt like milder labor pains. Now I am wandering if the thing had ruptured back in January when I first went in. *shrugs* the CT and ultrasound didnt take place until after those horrible pains, and since I havent had any other problems.
The Gyn I was seeing originally (in kansas) kept throwing the "C" word around... she did mentioned the dermoid, and something called a chocolate cyst. She said that there was the regular cyst you get from ovulating and so on, but she made a point of saying I did not have that kind. She said mine was either in the middle which she said it could be either nothing or it could be bad. or it was the "bad" kind. I called my Gyn office and waiting on a callback. I will see what I can do with this new doctor. If anything I can use another doctor, even if I have to pay for it for the first consult. Thank you for replying.

On another note, I am terrified of this thing bursting. I am in a new place, where I dont know anyone alone with 4 kids. Hubby is not here yet, so if it bursts.. lets just say it wouldn't be a good thing

i had a dermoid cyst that my doctor discovered early in my pregnancy.  to my understanding it was a solid mass.  It did have to be removed 6 weeks after i had my child.  it was a very easy surgery.  i felt normal a couple of days later.  I had another cyst 2 years later that i had no clue about that ruptured and it really really hurt.  Do they think yours is a dermoid cyst? I wish you the best I know that it scary and stressful.  i am wondering if i have another cyst now.  I never felt my others but now i have an achey feeling on my left side off and on every day.  sometimes if i pick my children up or move my leg up closer to my stomach(like when i am shaving) i feel a sharper pain.  do you experience that.  i go to the ob/gyn on the 9th.  has it made your periods any different.  mine are very screwed up.  i wish you the best

I'm more inclined to go with your first doctor's opinion to remove it.  I don't know that your type of cyst is the type that will shrink either.  The pills will at least put your ovaries into a resting mode which helps.  Normally all cysts over 5 cm are recommended for removal even when they appear and test benign.  You don't want it rupturing on you or possibly growing bigger.

All I can say is that a large cyst greatly compromises quality of life.  It did for me and I didn't know why I felt so bad.  I never guessed I had a cyst until it was found in an exam (the cyst was not the reason I had the exam!)

Mine was over 10cm when removed and was a simple cyst that proved to be benign in all pathology tests.  I got occasional pain twinges, felt a pulling sensation - but none of this was all the time.  If I held the area where the cyst was located while walking, it felt like a water balloon was sloshing around inside me.  Occasionally, I would get intense shooting pain in my back running down my legs.  I had horrifically bad constipation issues which I resolved by adding a lot more fiber to my diet.  And on one occasion I had a urine leak.

My energy levels were very low and I felt twice my age.  I also lost a lot of hair (cysts can do this to you).  Anesthesia from surgery is adding to that problem.  Everything I've read says the hair will start to recover, but I still have to wait a few months.

I was gaining size and weight around the middle even though I wasn't eating more.  Dieting did nothing to help.  Weight didn't budge.

Now I've taken off 8 pounds that have stayed off.  Waist is smaller.  Energy returned. All other problems mentioned above are gone, too.

So you need to look at your own situation to see if the cyst is doing things that are not making you feel like your normal self and trust your body's signals.  A gynocologist/ oncologist might have a different opinion than your new doctor regarding surgical removal.  They specialize in all abnormalities of the female pelvic area, including the benign ones.
