Dermoid cyst concern, did you have a laparotomy?

Hi everyone, I am 23 years old and I was just diagnosed with a 17.5 cm dermoid ovarian cyst. I was quite grossed out at the this type of cyst, and finally understood why my it has been so difficult for me to loose belly fat; even though I am really skinny on the rest of my body. (I have a prego belly :/) Because of the size of my dermoid cyst, my doctor has noted me that I will need a laparotomy. I am quite nervous and anxious about the recovery time, as I've been reading here it takes nearly 2-3 months to recover? I am also still waiting on my pre-op appointment; which frustrates me more because I feel like this thing is getting bigger! For those ladies who have experienced a laparotomy, how long did it take you to recover? I would greatly appreciate any advice and your support! Thank you

Thank you! I get frustrated at times, but I know that I will be okay. She mentioned to me that she has to do the surgery first and then see how my ovary is doing, and if she is able to save it or not.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this especially at such a young age. The typical recovery for that type of surgery is 6 to 8 weeks but your age and weight (thin) should be an advantage.

Has your doctor said (s)he would try to save your ovary or at least as much ovarian tissue as possible? Removing an ovary can impair fertility and even cause permanent hormonal / endocrine problems hence long-term health.

I hope the surgery goes well! Please keep us posted.
