I look 3 mo pregnant but getting negatives on hpt

I am a 30 year old female. Last 2 menstruations light but on time (28 day cycle), the most recent 7/28 lasted only 2 days and wasn't enough to use a pad. Started pink, then bright red, ended pinkish brown. My periods are always on time and with regular (not heavy) flow. I started having symptoms about 2 weeks prior to last period  and they have not subsided. Nausea, headaches, acne, very swollen heavy breasts (but not sore), swollen stomach, tiredness, weight gain and twinges or cramplike feelings in my upper abdomen just under my rib cage. Sometimes on the right side, left and middle of upper abdomen. No soreness in back, legs, or lower abdomen. No shoulder pain and no pain with intercourse. I started craving milk and my fingernails and hair have also had changes (stronger and growing faster). My mood has also changed: crying easily. My husband and I agree that it is much worse than any pms symptoms I have ever had. Hpt tests are still negative and they are being done correctly. I have an appt with ob/gyn in a couple days. No insurance, so I want to know what the right questions to ask and what tests I should request. My husband thinks I am pregnant, but tests (25 mcui sensitivity) still negative. Thoughts and opinions please?

it does sound like you are pregnant. i have an ovarian cyst and i fopund out on the net that the symptoms are close to that of pregnancy (even swollen breast) i thought i might have been pregnant also but found the cyst in an ultrasound. i have also heard in rare cases that a hpt gives false positive. im not sure what the cost of an ultrasound or blood test but i would ask for one or both.

Sometimes you can be pregnant and yet the test doesn't register it.  I would expect you to definitely be registering positive on a home pregnancy test by now since your symptoms started a couple of weeks before 7/28.  I have heard of women getting false negatives on home pregnancy tests in early pregnancy.  But, usually as more time passes, the home pregnancy test has many less false negatives.  The reason for so many false negatives in very early pregnancy is because it takes a certain amount of time to get high enough pregnancy hormones in urine and sometimes women conceived later than expected.  This makes them not have enough hormone to register positive on a test as soon as expected.   Anything is possible though.  It sounds like you took more than one test which would rule out a faulty test.  That can happen too.

It does sound like you have some hormonal changes.  Ovarian cysts can cause the symptoms you described.  I  am sure your doctor can run some tests and will possibly be able to identify the cause of your symptoms.  A transvaginal ultrasound is the best way to identify or rule out an ovarian cyst.  You mention acne and weight gain.  Sometimes a condition called PCOS can cause those symptoms as well.   Not having insurance is tough.  :( Be sure to write down your questions and symptoms so you don't forget anything.  Best wishes on trying to conceive.  The waiting can be tough!

Take care,

Shelly
