Well I'm 49 now so you have the advantage of youth on your side.  I was back to work in 6 weeks and not feeling reasonably normal until 8 weeks.

By week 3 or 4 I was able to take short trips (church, grocery shopping) with my husband, but he had to do all the lifting at the stores and I could not do much more than walk and point.

It's important to stock up on non-perishable necessities as much as you can so there is not a lot of need to shop during the first weeks when you are the most sore.  Take care of any other errands that require you to be out of the house, too.  Having time to plan is a great thing.  You have had weeks to anticipate this and it can help a lot.  I only had 3 DAYS!

If you have a rolling butler cart, that is a great way to move around heavier food and laundry items during the weeks when lifting is out of the question.

As of today, I find I still don't fare well after a heavy session of housework.  I vaccuumed out my husband's car last Friday and now I have so much pain where my left ovary used to be, I nearly took myself to the doctor.  But I think it's just muscle strain.  Those mucles are compromised by surgery and I have not done much exercise to strengthen them.  That's possibly my fault for not being active enough (unemployment does that to a person!)

Best wishes to you.  This won't be a normal Christmas for you, but it will be special in its own right since everyone that loves you will be making a huge fuss over you (we women need that sometimes!)

I had a laparotomy myself and was admitted on a Friday morning and released the following Monday morning.  Could probably have gone home on Sunday, but with only the weekend staff there, it was delayed until Monday.  I would think they would send you home by the 23rd or 24th.  My surgery story is in the "about me" section of my profile.  I did not have a dermoid but had a 10+cm cyst and both ovaries removed.  It is essentially the same surgery in terms of incision and recovery time.  Best wishes on a successful surgery.  You will be sore for Christmas Day but will be relieved to have the hospital experience behind you.
