30cm in length ovarian cyst.... Anyone similar?

Hello!

Just looking for a little reassurance I suppose.

Last week I was rushed for an emergency ultrasound after months of pain and being asked if I was pregnant about 20 times!

Last Wednesday I was found to have a 30cm in length ovarian cyst coming from my left ovary (so the surgeon thinks but as its so big, hard to tell)

Has anyone had a cyst of this size removed and did you keep your ovary?

I'm 29 and never had any children yet and all I can think about is having either one or both ovaries removed! I want children more than anything in the world but with a cyst so big, I'm expecting to lose my left ovary? The surgeon did say he would try and keep a 'part' of the ovary, if not all but I guess I'm just looking to hear from females in similar situations?

My pre op is next week on the 1st of July and hoping surgery will be ASAP!

Thank you xxx

That would be upsetting to het all those pregnant comments! It is good to hear it is a simple cyst. I hope the surgery goes well! Let us know as soon as you are up to it.

I  had my pre op on Wednesday. It was with a nurse so really couldn't answer any of my questions.

I have a 'simple' cyst full of fluid.

30 x 24 cm - no idea of how thick it is though! Very big.

Surgery is a week today. Friday 10th July.

Suppose it's only another week of stressing and then can speak to surgeon morning of my surgery but I so can't wait for this to be over. I'd give my right arm right now though so I didn't lose my ovary. I know one ovary works along but I'm so scared of complications and I know I will not take it well if he does have to take my left ovary. I'm quite an emotional person and I know it will get me down.

They are going to drain it but says he will have to remove it or it'll just fill up again. Was at a concert last night and the security guard asked if I wanted to take the loft instead of stairs cause I was 'with child'. I cannot wait to get this removed and these comments to stop being I've became so self concious and I used to be such a bubbly confident person but I'm so scared what I meant have to deal with after op.

Will let you know how pre op goes on Wednrsday xx

If the cyst is all fluid, can they maybe just drain the cyst? I have heard of them doing that sometimes.

Keep us posted.

Thank you for your comment!

My surgeon says he won't know what he's faced with until he opens me up but has said he will try to save at least a part of my left ovary.

It was a rushed appointment though as I had only gone for a scan but the lady doing my ultrasound said I wasn't leaving until I saw surgeon to get the ball rolling for my operation.

I suppose I'm just assuming before my cyst is so big and I've not seen anyone else on forum
Say they've had one as big as mine, that I'm automatically going to lose an ovary. I think  just thinking the worst.

Apart from looking pregnant and the odd pain in my tummy and back, the bowels are a bit out of sync and I'm peeing a lot - I'd say I've been quite lucky with symptoms. My periods are totally normal and with a cyst that size on my ovary, I thought I would be struggling to even get a period. The surgeon says the cyst is just full of fluid and never mentioned it being a complex cyst? I'm trying to see these little things as a positive.

My post op is next week, the 1st and I do have a long list of questions. I just hate this not knowing when I'm going to get op and sitting and waiting cause it's all I can think about. I just hope next Wednesday, after post op, I get a surgery date there and then as surgeon said he'd like me to have operation within 2 to 3 weeks.

Welcome to the community. I am sorry you are faced with this. 30cm is a big cyst! Removing an ovary can cause permanent loss of ovarian hormones which can affect not only fertility but lifelong health and well-being. A woman with all her parts produces hormones from her ovaries up to at least age 80. These hormones are vital for every aspect of health. A surgeon with good cystectomy skills can usually save at least part of the ovary which is usually enough to produce a normal level of hormones.

If you are not comfortable with what you are being told, seek out another surgeon and be sure to also explicitly state on your surgical consent form what can and cannot be removed under what conditions.

I was over-treated (de-sexed) for a benign ovarian cyst and it has affected every aspect of my life.

I hope your surgery goes well! Please keep us posted.

Yeah my surgeon has stressed how you only need 1 ovary to have children and it takes over and does the work for  both of them. Because I've not had kids yet, he did say he would try and save my left though.

I keep having nightmares though, that they take both ovaries and I've got a long list of questions now too. Ovarian cysts are something I have zero knowledge on, until I had my own, I was a bit naive if I'm honest and hadn't really heard of that. Terrible I know!

Could they tell before surgery that your tube was affected?

My surgery has never mentioned anything like that to me?

Thank you for your help! In so clueless with it all. Wish I had a date for surgery as I hate waiting and not knowing. I think because my cyst is so big, I'm expecting the worst :( xxx

Hello Emma, I too had a cyst just recently removed on the 16th. Mine was only 3.7cm, but my doctor had to remove 75% of my right ovary, I still have my left, but my left fallopian tube is collapsed. From what I read on these forums so far (as my post op is not until Thursday, so I can't ask questions yet). It is 100% possible to get pregnant with only one working ovary. You just ovulate every other month. Your doctor may give you fertility meds such as clomid to help make sure you ovulate. Please do not be discouraged. Anything is possible! Good luck
