I'm sorry you are going through this especially at your young age! Some gyn surgeons have better cystectomy (cyst removal) skills than others. Hopefully, you are with one of the best and if you suspect he/she is not, you may want to seek out another one. According to this website http://ovaryresearch.com/ovarian_cysts.htm the entire ovary seldom needs to be removed for an ovarian cyst. I have read that if some ovarian tissue is preserved, the ovary can regenerate.
Removal of one ovary can impair fertility. But our ovaries are needed beyond reproduction. They produce hormones our whole lives that are essential to good health. Removal of one ovary can permanently disrupt this process and predispose us to many health problems.
Best of luck to you in getting proper treatment! Keep us posted on surgery and recovery.
Hi there ..In october 2015 I had a 17cm mass aswell as my right ovary removed ..I can relate to the pain aswell as the misdiagnosis you recieved , twice I was sent home from the emergency with anti biotics for a UTI ..anyway when I was correctly diagnosed I was booked in for surgery ..they did a straight up and down cut from beneath my belly button to the top of my vagina ..I had 22staples which have odviously left a scar ..My menstrual flow remains the same and with alot of bed rest my recogery lasted 2weeks ..The only advice id like to share with you is these mass`s are not cancerous so do not panic , Stay positive and youll be much more comfortable once its out xxx
