Horrible Treatment from Pharmacist!!

Good morning all;
I'm a regular on the fibro forum but I lurk here everyday. I have been very fortunate as far as my doctors go. Both of them know me well, especially my internist and when I told him I was hurting to the point of wanting to give up on life, he knew that something was not right. After many hours of tests and gallons of blood being drawn, my Rheumy DXed me Fibro/CFS.

Talking about people shaking their heads and whispering behind my back. Geez!!  Thank God my family understood and they have been Heaven sent. Other people, my neighbors etc. is another matter.

I get all of my meds at Walmart and have for as long as I can remember, but I made the mistake in going to a mom and pop pharmacy. I have never been so embarrassed in my entire life. After sitting and waiting for 30 minutes the pharmacist called my name loudly for everyone in the store to hear I'm sure. I slowly got up and shuffled over to the counter and with his big mouth and booming voice he told me that he would not be a part of feeding my drug habit.

I didn't know what to say. When I realized that a crowd had gathered behind me I got pissed. I demanded my scripts back and that person stood there and tore them up!! I called my doctor right then and told him what was going on. I handed the phone to the pharmacist and my internist blasted into him. When I got my phone back, my internist told me to walk out and come back to his office. He re-wrote my scripts and then helped me to file a grievance against the pharmacist.

As of last Friday, the mom and pop pharmacy is now closed for good. Seems I wasn't the first nor the last CP customer that he had refused to fill scripts for. He had no right to make me feel like I did that day. I told my Pharmacist at Walmart what had happened and she was already in the process of testifying against this person for refusing to fill scripts for chronic patients. Unbelievable!!

The police need to stop wasting money and time on marijuana everywhere, and work on stopping illegal pill dealers, meth and the rest honestly.

Kiddthecatt,

Your calls to the sheriff are probably not being ignored. Keep calling!! It can take time and the right set-up or situation to catch these scums. I'm sure Red can comment better than I on those situations.

And it was successful for Mollyrae. I bet the same applied. They just had to wait for the right moment. These ppl can be cleaver and hard to catch. Don't give up. The more we can get off the street the easier it will be for us in the long run.

Pharmacists have no right trying to judge who is "deserving" of opiates or not. There job is to fill a legal perscription and to counsel on drug interactions, actions and the like.

Keep making those calls to the Sheriff's or Police. We had a man selling all kinds of things around here. He was my Mechanic until I found out what he was selling out of his shop. It took me 3 years and a few calls for him to be shut down.

The DEA shut this man down like something out of the movies and arrested him. I don't know what they are going to do with him....hopefully lock him up and throw away the key.

My point is that you have to keep on top of it. Let the Police know that your serious about getting these ppl off of the street.

I'm working on another woman who was selling Opiates to my Son. I am working on finding out where she lives. I have already given the Police the woman's first name and that's all I have right now but I will find out and she will be out of business before long.

Take care and keep making those calls...........

Some people have no idea what they do to us when they take advantage of doctors who do give scripts for pain. They don't know and could care less. But what I am about to tell you all will be the worst of the worse.

My daughter's husband has an Uncle who fought in Nam, and he gets his medication from the VA hospital. This man came back from Nam in horrible condition, physically and mentally. He gets several medications monthly, including several different pain meds. My daughter was telling me that this man sells all of his pain meds and makes a lot of money off of them. I was pissed off!!

I've gone as r as called the VA about it, and the sheriff in his town, NADA!! He is still doing it every month. And if that's not bad enough, he had the nerve to call me and offer me a "deal" on pills. I came unglued on that man. And I was wasting my breath. There are so many men and women coming back from Iraq in various conditions and they aren't being taken care of like they  should be. And then you have this scum selling pain meds to anyone with a buck, As a journalist, I wrote a piece for our local paper about the situation.............and it was declined. You can bet that politics were involved.

OK, end of my vent. We have so many obstacles to cross just to be treated with respect, and people like this man push the chronic pain sufferers back and then we have to work are butts off to get the meds we need to function in today's world. Makes me so angry!!

Yes I am sure a call to the sheriff's office will do the trick. they are obligated to check out your claim and when they do they will handle it:)
Also see if you have a tip line in your community to report crimes that would be a way to go about it too.
I can't believe her doctor did nothing!

I can't tolerate that either. diversion is one of the two main reasons our meds are hard to get. That infuriates me.

i did report it to her doctor but i dont think anythinng was done about it and i thought about calling him again because i feel the same way you do.  i never thought about calling the sherriffs dept. will they act on it or just investigate a little and drop it.. the sherriffs dept. around here arent  to energetic.  ive even have heard that these young women on welfare that have babies after babies will go to the er and with their medical card and pretend they are in alot of pain and will get narcotics and then turn around and sell them so they can get money to go to a bar and get drunk!  ITS PATHETIC!!!!!

I ALWAYS turn people like that in. An anonymous phone call to the sheriffs dept will take care of it. If we do not stand up and say NO you can't get away with this then we can't expect others to either. I have turned people in that were selling their pills in the parking lot of the doctors office.

thats awful what the pharmacist did to you... in the first place its none of his business!  ive notice since ive been really sick that alot of people can be judgemental and i dont like it especially when they look at me like ... what the hell are u doing on pain medicine?  i dont have to explain anything to anyone except for my doctor.  my pain gets so bad most of the time that i dont even want to wake up in the mornings and people dont know how another feels and they shouldnt treat u that way!  things like that make me so upset.  its like the real ones that are in chronic pain get all the ********!  like i said before.. i know of a lady that gets240 percocets a month and she sells every  one of them and she never has to do a drug test or has trouble getting her medicine.. of coarse!  ive had trouble since day one!  its always something when it comes to getting my pain medicine!  ALWAYS!!  im proud of the way u handled it.. i dont know what i would of done... probably start crying!!   so.. good 4 u and take care!!

Trying to explain to someone that you have pain is bad enough...but trying to do that when they can already see that you are in pain...that's ridiculous.

Sorry you had such a bad experience.

I wear "carpul braces" on both my wrists and just can't avoid being asked "What happened to your hands".  Seriously, I am getting tired of the old routine of telling them it is due to arthritis and then having them gawk at me and exclaim "But you are so young!".

My pharmacist, of course, grins from ear to ear when I walk in because he knows I am going to walking out with a whole arm full of pills.

Keep Well

Thank you all for your replies. I'm positive that this was one of many instances that a pharmacist overstepped the boundaries. It is so wrong of them to label any of us as pill seekers. I am 54 years old, hobbled up and walk with a cane, it really looks to me that anyone would be able to see how much pain that I am in.

It's not fair to be judged by anyone, much less someone who is suppose to help us. I thought that I was doing something to keep the money in our community, never again! I was so angry that I wanted to box his ears, it took everything I had not to do it. I did get word from my pharmacist at Walmart that the old coot had lost his licence. Oh well, what did he expect? With no license he had no pharmacy, and he had to close the doors.

I've learned since being DXed with Fibro/cfs that I ave to have a stiff spine and plenty of patience with people who do not believe or understand. Those who are interested I take the time to explain, those who aren't, I dimiss and try to stay away from them. It sure makes life less stressing. Take care all.

You go girl!!!! One small step for Angel, one large step for Chronic Pain Sufferers!!
Excuse the pun!

I would like to think that I would like to think that everyone would have had the same intestinal fortitude that you did but I will bet that many walked out of that pharmacy with the head hung in shame and embarrassment. You spoke for all of the ppl that didn't have the courage to speak up for their rights.

As a pharmacist he had no business infringing more pain and suffering upon his customers. Nor did he have the right to second guess the physician unless he thought your life was in danger. Than and only than should he have picked up the phone to consult with the prescribing physician.

I am so glad that his business has been shut done! I hope they never let him practice again. He doesn't deserve to any consideration. I am sorry that this happened to you.  Thank you from one pain sufferer to another.

Good for you.  I know how you feel. those mom and pop ones aren't always the best to go to. I had one tell me in a booming voice that she thought I was bi polar. Which I am not. But even if I was she had no right annoucing it to the whole pharmacy.

Congrats to you for taking charge of the situation and for not letting them get away with that!  I agree with Mollyrae that you should start a lawsuit of your own for defamation of character.  How embarassing for you!  I am so sorry that you had to endure that!

If a person chooses to become a pharnacist, they need to decide right then and there that if a person walks into their store with a prescription, they had best be prepared to fill it.  If they think there is something hinky about it, call the physician and verify that the prescription is legitimate.  If it is, treat that customer with the respect they deserve.  Otherwise, get another job doing something where you don't have to deal with people.  I am very glad to hear that the store is now closed!

Wow Angel, that's awful. I keep hearing stories like this, and I'm glad I've never had to experience it. I can't believe anyone can be that....just wow.

I'm glad they're closed though, they provide a service and are required to give you what you're prescribed. It's like going to a bookstore and the owner telling you he won't sell you the book because he doesn't approve, it makes no sense. No pharmacy with this mindset or agenda should exist, period.

Hooray for you Angel:

I'm so glad to hear that you stood up for yourself. Many others would have just walked out the door in shame. I think it would suit the Mom and Pop Pharmacy justice if you were to add a law suit to the mix. I think that would really get the point across.

They had no right to label you in such a horrific manner. And with a Pharmacy full of customers is even worse. I wish I were a Lawyer...You and I would march into the court house and file " The Big One".........

Please take care and keep up the good work in protecting your name!
