Pain in lower left side and back.

l joined  MedHelp for a different ailment l was suffering from that has since cleared up...but l thought l would jump over to the Pain section since this is what lm suffering from every single day!
lm a 35 year old mother of two and have lived a healthy, moderatly active life. lm not overweight and have never been in an accident of any kind.About 3 years ago, my neck on the left side began hurting terribly. lt eased up a bit with lbuprofen but l had to take it around the clock to live life. My DR could not find a concrete reason for the cause even after an x-ray and an MRI....it was just assumed to be muscular and so l had Lidocain injections and physical therapy for a year and the problem did go away THANK GOD!!!!!....but at the end of that year, a new area of pain began developing. It was my lower left side into my hip and occassionally into that leg. My theory was that since I was taught new postures and stretches that I may have cause a flair up of some sort in that part of my body since it was all new movements and excercises. Well the problem persisted and worsened over time and there I was back at my DR at square1 with a new mysterious pain issue. This time he sent me to a new Pain speciallist who is a Neurologist and after I was examined, he explained to me that my muscles seem to be the issue. He could feel that they were very stiff and bulgy on the left side..I think he called it Dystonia...has anyone heard of it? He started me on pain therapy meds and explained that this can be common in women my age and it may worsen and become a problem in other areas of my body but may not..no-one can predict..but basically its here possibly for life. Im encouraged AND discouraged all at the same time....lm leary of taking meds for the rest of my life but l dont want to be plagued with this pain either....is anyone dealing with this same issue?

In August 2003 I was struck by a quickly reversing car and the back of my mountain bike with me on it slew under the back of the car landing very heavily on my left leg especilly my rump which quickly became traumitised.  Just this week fourd out my lower left tissues are partly torn under the pelvic area. My physiotherapist asked me to have my long term doctor examine the area concerned.  He will give me a letter to give to my Physiotherapist Kylie McMahon just three years out of Melbourne University.  Only for Kylie I would not be able to walk

Thank you for the reply!
I am very appreciative that the medicines have indeed brought me relief and I am also pleased to know that my condition isnt life-threatening so I think I can overlook the fact that I will be on long-term drug therapy for this.
l plan to do more research on the condition...thanks for the suggestion!
l am still hoping that anyone else on this forum with info on Dystonia or similar symptoms will freely share with me their experience and remedies that they may know about.

I have heard of Dystonia. In fact I have seen several documental stories regarding the disease on educational networks.

Dystonia is a broad term. Focal dystonia is localized to a specific part of the body.  There are all types of Dystonias. "The dystonias are movement disorders in which sustained muscle contractions cause twisting and repetitive movements or abnormal postures. The movements, which are involuntary and sometimes painful, may affect a single muscle; a group of muscles such as those in the arms, legs, or neck; or the entire body."

I don't personally know anyone with the condition. There is a lot of information on the web regarding the different types of this disease condition. I am sorry that you are afflicted with it. I do hope that it remains localized.

None of us chronic pain sufferers want to take "pills," especially for the remainder of our lives. However given the choice we would rather have some degree of comfort than live with horrid often dysfunctional causing pain on a daily basis.

One of our members may be able to offer you better information based on first hand experience. I hope you will keep in touch with us and let us know how you are progressing. I wish you the very best.

Peace,
Tuck
