Pharmacist who question your doctor

Have you went into the pharmacy to have a prescription filled for your pain medicine and be told your that your filling a narcotic and they want to know why your taking it? Or that your taking too much and they refuse to be party to addicting you to meds you don't need (according to the pharmacist), it's so frustrating having to explain why your taking a med that your Dr gave you to take!
I tell them it is none o their business and they are there to fill it and tell me about side affects and reactions and make sure I am not taking anything that will react with the med.
It is bad enough we have to fight to find a Dr that will help us now we have to deal with the pharmacist that is a Dr wanna be.
Any thoughts on this and has it happened to you?

Yes it happen to me and I was in the car with other people and it went over a speaker inside. I ask why they needed to know and was told they had to report to DEA. . I said that's between the Doctor and me. But in order to get meds I had to give details.

There is no such thing as to much professionalism.  I always leave the perscription for later pickup.  In Texas, class II drug scripts are three part and one part goes to the DEA, they must be used within 7 days or they are void.  THey cant be folded or damaged.  I always get all of my scripts at the same store, invite them to call my pmd, and see to it that I know all the employees.  If they hire a new one, I intro myself.  I have my pmd write them a letter through the mail every six months outlineing my condition and his treatment decisions.  I used to have problems, now I thank them for their involvment in my treatment each time I go in and I have no problems.  Where would I get a copy of the pain patients bill of rights?  Good luck and God bless all!

DOES the chronic pain patient have legal rights? Written RIGHTS
If the prescription is within legal bounds, yes, they may have to go to a different pharmacy.

Pharmacists are indeed within their rights to question any prescription. My bro's girlfriend is a pharmacist, so she knows. I, too, have gotten "the looks" , the "out of stock" response, the questions. It certainly doesn't pay to be rude - it IS their business. You catch more flies with honey than vinegar - old adages are based in truth. What I have done is asked my doc for a letter stating why I am taking opiates. I have an 18 year history with the same pharmacy and still deal with bias at times. Once a prescription is over 30 days it is considered invalid and may be withheld (at least in Massachusetts). You might ask them if they've heard of the Pain Patients Bill of Rights (not actually a legal document) and present them with a copy. Politely.

Hello Readytodie,

Welcome to the Pain Management Forum at MedHelp. You have posted on an old thread. You should post a new question for the best response.

Sandee is out for a while due to computer problems. However I can tell you that yes the prescribing physician may recall the prescription. That is what he/she basically has done. Often with a opiate medication they will not fill it if it is "old." Thirty days is considered old. The general consensus is if you were able to go 30 days without the medication you may not need it.

I would contact the prescribing physician and discuss this with him/her. He may call and "approve" the filling of the opiate or he may write you a new one. Good luck to you. Please let us know how this all turns out. We learn from one another. Take Care!

Peace, Tuck

I think written scripts are only good for a certain period of time.  I know if they fill it and you don't pick it up within 7 days it is expired.  I think the rules are different in different states.

Just 30 minutes ago, a pharmacist told me that they called my doctor to make sure the RX was "real." It was real, but it was 30+ days old because I didn't have the money to pay for it 30 days ago. I guess this was a red flag for the pharmacist to call my doctor. According to the pharmacist, my doctor told him to KEEP THE RX at the pharmacy and put a "freeze" on my file! So, the pharmacist not only refused to fill the RX but also refused to give me back the paper script! I will find out if my doctor really told them to keep it. If he did, is THAT legal? If the doctor wrote me the RX, isn't it mine? BTW, it was for 60 tablets of 20mg oxycontin.

I am glad you are trying to help, and I did not or will not argue either I was stating my opinion just as you are so just leave it at that. I really don't think you get that you were wrong about my post on the depression issue but hey I give up. Just agree to disagree.
I am the first person to admit when I am wrong.

I dont argue on these forums, there is no need for it.

Obviously it is a huge deal to you to be right at all costs. So to keep you from throwing these "cyber" tantrums, you can infact be right.
you can keep telling everyone.."dont listen to anyone who says this or that" just because I told someone not to listen to someone(you) who tells you not to get help and hide your depression,  I dont care.  It's obviously a problem you have, not mine.

Everything I say is my opinion from by personal and prodessional experience. MY OPINION. No one should take advice from anyone on these forums without talking to there DR first, its a disclaimer stated all over this site.
But I still try to give advice as not to harm anyone.
I have spent many years in school and working in the field and try to help others with what I have learned and experienced.
I'm the first to say, go to your DR and that I am not a DR,  But I am a professional in the field of Psychology and substance abuse and intened to put that knowlege to good use instead of having it wasted because I'm ill.
You dont like it, dont read my replies to people.

You assume I don't know how to handle myself or business. You can tell someone to mind their own business o tell them it simply is not any of their business without being harsh or offensive. I have a vast knowledge of how to deal with people in the business world and personal.

I have talked to the police and the pharmacist......
I went to get my script filled and this pharmacist decided himself I did not need it and proceeded to keep t without filling it. I called the police and they MADE HIM return it to me and apoligize. I have never been in trouble and think that some pharmasist like this one is power crazy. THE Police themselves told me to tell the rxist that it really is none of their business what I take .... for unless it is needed to fill the script and told me to tell them if they have a problem then they need to confront me or call the dr if they suspect the script is altered. So I have consulted the law and the rxist.
When someone is rude and treats me badly I will and do respond. I do handle the situ with class.
When one tells you not to defend yourself you should never listen.
I treat the matter like I would any other business dealing, and I will continue to do so.
I did not change pharmcies and now the owner himself waits on me ad still apoligizes for the incident saying it was uncalled for and NONE OF HIS BUSINESS WHY I TAKE....

Pharmasists CAN and DO call the law if they believe you are engaging in illegal activites and have on many ocassions. I DIDNT say they call if they dont like you or what you are prescribed.
If they believe you are showing signs an addict would show they will call the DR and let them know what they have witnessed.

Telling a pharmacist that it is none of there buisness and to do what they are there to do is rude and uncalled for.  Being rude is not advocating for yourself.
Agian, they CAN and DO have the right to contact the poice if they feel you are doing anything which warrents it.
Again, they CAN and DO have the right to call the prescribing DR if they feel they need to.
They can do more than you think they can hence, causing problems in getting narcotic prescription if your behavior is out of character.

If they dont like you, there going to watch you closely. Pharmasists generaly dont dislike people unles they have been rude or condesending.
I dont care if you talk to your pharmasist that way, its not my problem. Perhaps you should ask your pharmy if they can report you, or better yet call your local police and ask them if they believe your narcotic prescription is none of there buisnes.

You narcotic prescription is the buiness of anyone that has to come in contact with it.  You dont think your pharmasist is liable in any way for the medication they fill???

Think whatever you want but how you are treating your pharmy is not in any way considered advocating for yourself. It's called something else.

We have rights and just because the pharmasist treats us like were addicts DOES NOT mean we have to sit back and take it!!!
Pharmacist have the power to call ur doc and check the validity od a script or call the lae if it is a forged script other than that they have no power over you they are there to do what they are told by the dr SIMLE AS THAT

Yes I think everyone has gotten those looks. I dont leave it up to the dr to complain on my behalf like toomanyadvil says. I am my own advocate and if they are treating me in an unkind way I respond to their treatment. They CAN NOT CALL THE POICE OR WITH HOLD MEDS because they dis like you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Toomany advil you are wrong.
One has to stand up for themselves and if they dont no one will DO IT FOR THEM!!!!!!

I have never been asked like you but I get these looks.  You know those looks.  I was prescribed loracet and it made me sick.  I called the Dr. he called in Hydros.  I took them for awhile but then I had problems sleeping.  He then prescribed Darvocet which did nothing.  So he went back to what I took before which was Somas.  After I took those 90 pills he called in more and yea I get looks like r u a dopehead.  Sometimes I wish they (at pharmacy) had to experience my pain.  I wouldnt tell them anything if they asked.  My scripts r all from the same Dr. so if they have a problem I would call him and have him call them and tell them to chill out.  Hang in there!!!!!

Yes, I did. After I had been on my pain meds for more than 8 months after my first fusion. She was a newly graduated pharmacist. She had an objection to how they were prescribed. I had been at the same dose, with the same doctor prescribing since my surgery, at the same dosage intervals.
In fact, she also questioned my Lyrica dosage, and my baclofen. She resorted to claiming that they were not in stock. Funnily enough , she managed to tick off my doctor. It was strange for an out of stock product, it sure was there as soon as her shift was over. My doctor advised me to change pharmacies and he called the company office and made a complaint himself. He was furious.

My advice is to never tell them it is none of there biusness, but to calmly tell them that your DR feels this is a nessesary treatment for your disease or condition.
Pharmasists have power when it comes to what they think.  They have on many ocassions called authorities or the prescribing DR when they suspect someone is being over prescibed or may be an addict. The police take what they say into account. I'd let the DR tell th epharmasist it is none of there buisness and to just follow the script.
They may be looking to see how you react and telling them it's none of there buisness and to do only what they are there to do may lead the pharmasist to believe you have a hostile attitude and get angry at how you are treating and be litteling them. Pharmasists dont like that,
They may be DR wanna be's, but there still right up there with being able to cause problems in us getting the meds we need.
Be more than pleasant to them and say something like, your condition or illness requires this type of pain relief and your DR had prescribed them for that reason.
That way you are not adding to there judgement of you and what you are taking.  When people are angry and be littled they tend to be less than understanding and accomidating.
Just my experience

Thank you. This happened to me today. I didn't know how to reply. Although unfortunately I have been dealing with chronic pain for years and know that the last thing I should do is argue with or debate a pharmacist (even though it's none of their business, its between me and my doc), I was still unsure and in shock. Thankfully I just listened to her . She filled my scripts but I will definately have a talk with my pain management doctor at next months appointment. This can be so frustrating, especially when you are doing nothing wrong.
