Mylan vs Teva fentanyl patch?

Hi. I have recently started the patch and have found a difference between effectiveness of the two brands TEVA and MYLAN. First I had Teva 12mcg/72hrs (twice) then 2X 12mcg/72 (twice) and then went to 50mcg patches on the 72hr interval, so far twice. The 25mcg patches are Mylan brand and I noticed, pretty quickly, a decrease in effectiveness. Has anyone else?

My pharmacy says I can specify... otherwise the script will be filled with Mylan.

My doctor originally prescribed 50mcg/72hrs but I (with an RN and a pharmacist) determined it was too high a dose to start with. My doctor was converting from 4X5mg oxycodone. I aim to try the 50mcgs at some point as the 25s aren't quite doing it. Thus the query... 25mcg Teva might be worth trying before doing that jump?? I appreciate learning from others'  experiences....

Hello and Welcome.

I have heard others say that they can tell the difference between Fentanyl Patches. It's my understanding that Mylan and Teva have basically the same delivery system which is the  matrix design which incorporates the drug into the adhesive. What explain this? Maybe it's the way your system metabolizes the way the manufacturer makes the drug. The actual drug has to be the same - but the additives or manufacturing process may differ - hence the way you metabolize the product.

Maximum pain relief may not occur for up to 72 hours after first beginning or changing the dose of this medication. So consider that when deciding how effective each may be.

If you feel one is more effective than the other - than by all means follow your pharmacists suggestion and request the most effective one.  Sometimes there just isn't an immediate explanation as to why one medication is more effective than other for us - without having your DNA evaluated.

Good luck my friend in pain. I hope whatever you decide will bring you better pain management.

Take Care,
~Tuck
