Migraine Medications

Anyway, I am taking Imitrex for my migraines. Well, I had problem with script to fill Imitrex medicine couple years ago.... it only supplys 9 and only covers one any type of migraine medication PER month. When I ran out of it, I asked my doctor to give me script for more Imitrex and I dropped script off at Walgreens then few minutes later, pharmacist told me that insurance was not covering that... I asked why and told me that insurance will only pay only ONE package - any kind of migraine medication per month so then I asked how much is it as I was willing to pay for it BUT when she said it was $200 around that. I was like oh my gosh, you got to be kidding... no way I'm going to pay that much and told her forget about that prescription. I called my doc and told him about insurance etc so he called in Vicodin. I get migraines usually one to three times a week. I have tried other migraine medications such as Topamax that supplies 30 days I believe, but it doesn't help and other migraine medications as well. So far Imitrex works for me most of the time. When it doesn't, I usually take two tylenol with one clonazepam... sometimes it works, sometimes not. When it doesn't help, then I'd take Vicodin as a last resort, it usually works most of the time. I know it can lead "rebound" migraines so I try not to use Vicodin, only as a last resort. Occassionally, I would have to go ER to get treated for my migraines. IMO, insurance should cover more than one migraine medications rather than having to take Vicodin or other type of narcotic pain medication as an alternative to relieve my migraines and with the fact that it can cause rebound migraines. Oh well. I'm curious if any one of you know other medications I should try if I run out of imitrex besides taking Vicodin? I like to try other alternatives to see which that works for me, you know? Thanks :o)

I sffered migraines for years, and then I started going to a chiropractor for my FMS, told him about my migraines, and only had one in the last three years.Other people i know that suffered with it,and they too went to the chiro, and are virtually pain free from migraines now. You can spend a fortune on pills,so give it a try if you want to that is.

I had migraines for years and couldn't find anything to help much until I stumbled onto Omega-3 supplements (fish oil capsules). I started taking them for my cholesterol, but noticed after a while I wasn't having any more migraines. My doctor told me it may be the anti-inflammatory benefits of the Omega-3, the same thing that protects your heart. You can google "Lifeguard Health" for the brand I use, but there are many out there. Just Google "Omega-3 supplements" to find others. They're not covered by insurance, but if you can afford it, it is worth it.

Hi Sunflower:

Sorry to hear of the migraines. I have used Remeron in the past with good relief. The generic name is Mirtazapine. You take it as you feel the migraine coming on and it generally kept it away for me. Ask you Doc about it. It's non habit forming too!!
Take care and good luck,
Mollyrae
