I changed pediatricians because my daughter was terrified after the doctor checked her for a yeast infection. He was abrupt and my daughter couldn't understand what he was saying. It was awful.. her dad and I felt bad afterwards. She still talks about him and that was three years ago--when she was 3!
I would find someone your child is comfortable with.
Thank you so much for you input on what going on with my son....I really appreciate it :)
My daughter is much younger (17 months) but deals with serious constipation, also. She would get little anal fissures so our family doctor wrote us a script for a compounded ointment but what really helped give her some relief was the Lidocaine topical gel our doctor prescribed for her. I put a small amount around her anus which created a numbing effect so that she would stop holding back when she had to go. I guess doctors use Lidocaine for numbing before different procedures and my doctor said it worked wonders for hemorrhoids, too.
Working with both our family doctor and the GI doc, we used the above tricks and also added MiraLax, a stool softening laxative that is available over-the-counter, to her diet. Don't let laxative scare you off. My daughter was taking a full adult dose and it doesn't create a need to go NOW. It is gentle and safe. This may be something that would work for your son but I would only do it if your doctor agrees.
It does sound like the GI doc didn't have the best bedside manners and you should feel comfortable with both your doctor and your child's. I would suggest seeing another GI doc or talking to your family physician. Good luck.
