daughter w/migraines & nose bleeds

I work in the Pediatric Intensive Care unit in wisconsin, and my daughter just turned 8 in Feb.  However, for the past 6-8 months she's been experiencing severe headaches that last for 5-7 days, nose bleeds, vomiting, and severe abdominal pain.  I've been taking her into the emergency room when any of these happen.  They send us home and say give her tylenol or mortin.  However, the children's stuff is not strong enough, and she is still getting these symptoms without any real diagnostic testing being done.  Should I worry about some tumor or pre-puberty???  I don't know what else to do.  I've been keeping a log when she gets anyone of these symptoms and when they are together.  I made her a DR apt and her dad cancelled it because she wasn't having those symptoms anymore.  I work 12 hrs a day, and on my day's off well are sometimes impossible to get her in.  I am out of possibilities as to what it could be, and without anyone doing further testing on her.  Can you help guide me in the right direction??

I thank you both for the valuable information.  It is a relief to know that other children are going through what she is going through.  My husband doesn't think anything of it.  I know how my daughter feels when she gets them, I used to get migraines so bad I couldn't move and I would usually end up in the emergency room for a shot.  However, her doctor doesn't seem to think that there is anything wrong with her.  I seem to get that a lot from our physicians up here.  I've been having back pain on the scale of 9-10.  It used to start out by 3 hours on me feet to now 15 minutes on my feet.  After months of pain pills, muscle relaxers, and anti-immflamitories, and physical theropy, I get to see a chiropracter who decides to take x-rays.  For a while I thought it was all in my head.  This has been going on for 7 months.  My x-rays show that my L3-L5 and S1 are stuck together pinching my nerves and also damaging my intestines by slowing my bowels......Yeah so I know it;s  not just in my head, but sometimes I just wish that these doctors would really truly listen to their patients.  These things are not just in their heads.  And I agree that a mother's instinct with their children are usually correct.  I can diagnose my kids better than the doctors sometimes.  Scary!!!  Thanks for the help though.  I am still writting down when she gets them and how often.  I've counted at least 6 since these past 3 weeks.  :(

Hi!  My daughter is 11, she has been getting migraine headaches since she was 7 years old.  Her pediatrician did do a cat scan to rule out other possibilities and when nothing was found on those, he diagnosed her with migraines.  We do have a family history of them.  My grandmother gets them and so do I.  Does anyone else in your family get them?  My daughters migraines usually last 1 to 2 days and she does vomit with them &  her stomach hurts.  She has never had any nose bleeds though.  After the pediatrician diagnosed her with migraines he referred her to a neurologist.   The neurologist put her on imitrex nasal spray to take when she would get the migraine & another pill that she had to take daily to try to prevent her from getting them.  I hope this helps!  It's horrible to see someone this age in such pain.  I know I can barely stand the pain when I get one.  She definitely needs more then tylenol.

Just a thought...it is possible that these are related to changes in hormones---I did not start having migraines until about the time I hit puberty.  I would consult your pediatrician and try to get a referral to a neurologist.  Good luck- I also work 12 hour days as a pharmacist, and with my 3 year old its tough to juggle.  A parent's instinct is usually right...so dont get discouraged, and make sure your daughter knows that you're working for her, not against her.
