Question regarding the baby engaging....

I am almost 38 weeks and just had a doctors appointment.  Doctor said I am 1cm.  He was pushing near my pelvis for the baby's head and found it (as usual).  I was just wondering how far down the baby actually goes when it engages itself....  He was pushing between my hip bones for the baby's head... I don't think I've dropped yet as I am still having some problems breathing - but perhaps I have - I've got no clue.

I am on baby #2 37w7d and doc says baby is engaged but high.  I definitely feel it "down there" when the baby moves around.  Breathing is much easier.

There are different "stations" of engagement. -2 means baby is still pretty high whereas +2 means baby is about to be delivered!

Yes this is my first baby and I am 38 weeks today - wow how time has flown by!  It is still very very active (but I was told that we all were until we were born).

I agree to everything Chantal has said. First babies tend to "drop" 2-4 weeks befor birth in first time mommies, but that is not always the case. You could drop while going into labor or a little before. Is this your first baby?? The breathing should get easier soon. Either way you only have a few weeks left at most before you meet your little one and then you'll be breathing better:)

Great thanks!   He didn't say anything about it, and I'm still having the odd problem breathing... so I'm guessing it's still floating around doing its thing.....

I don't know exactly how far down the baby drops when engaging. But when my doc checked me she said she could feel the head (she didn't have to go in too far) but it was still floating meaning when she pushed on the head a bit, it woud go back up a bit and then come back down. Once the baby is engaged, your doc will feel the head where it is and it won't move. You should feel more pressure down there if the head is engagedn and probably be able to breathe easier since the baby will be lower.
