The best thing to do about avoiding dry and cracked nipples is put Vaseline or petroleum jelly on them when you are done feeding until your use to it ... Its only painful for the first couple weeks or if you miss a feeding if you can't make it to your baby have a hand breast pump to relieve swelling ...
I agree with everyone! Make sure the baby is latching correctly firstly. An improper latch will be painful. If baby is latched correctly it should not be painful. That being said it will be uncomfortable for the first week and a half to 2 weeks. I think day six was killer for me with my first. By then the sleep deprivation has kicked in so your ate irritable and your milk is coming in full force and your boobs will ache from being engorged! I didnt pump then when that happened as that just triggers your body to make more. Have a hot shower and let some come out on it own. I agree with the lanolin for cracking. A tip i got with my first was to use a little bit daily from the get go to avoid the cracking before it happens. I dont remember mine cracking at all. They were dry but never cracked. If you stick it out it actually gets pretty easy and quite rewarding. And the uninterupted snuggles are great! Hopefully i will be able to nurse my new little one! Good luck to all you future nursers!
I had my daughter almost a month ago.. Its hard the first few days. But if it hurts or cracks try seeing a lactation consultant. They helped me. Or get a nipple shield. Its a little silicone cover that you use until the babu learns how to latch properly, but there's holes so they still get the breast milk as they suck, it just prevents pain for you.
I'm FTM my daughter is 4days old and it hurts at times but I use lanolin on my nipples and pump and feed at the same time so it isn't to painful
In the beginning it is very painful because your milk hasn't come in yet but when it does it gets better. Just try to stick it out. I agree see a lactation nurse and have them see atch you feed so you know if the baby is latching correctly
@brylee — maybe she's not latching on correctly? try seeing a lactation nurse and see if she's latching on properly. hopefully that's just the case!
i'm a first time mom & i'm still pregnant, but my cousin told me her experience and said that she had to just endure that in the beginning and then it gets easier. but i know there are some nipple balms you can buy to help with the cracking. hopefully you can stick through it!
I'd also like to know. I'm currently trying to breastfeed but my daughter doesn't like to stay on long enough to get full. She's gets frustrated
