Contraction

So does your stomach have to get hard in order for it to be a contraction or can you just have really strong menstrual cramps?

Yes, as with any sort of muscle spasm or contraction the muscles tense and get hard. Since its your whole uterus that contracts it does get hard although you may not be able to tell as much if you're having strong cramping pain too but contractions will always make your stomach hard.
