I didn't get checked for dilation until 39 weeks.. a day before 39 weeks specifically. But that's because it was the soonest I got to a Dr due to a move and hadn't seen a Dr since 33 weeks before that. I haven't gotten checked for anything else. I don't know how low he is.. in what position.. if I'm effaced... nothing.

I was never checked for dilation or effacement (same as thinning) until I was admitted to the birthing center 12 hours into labor when I asked my midwife to give me an update. There's not any good reason for it to be done in advance because it doesn't tell them how close you are to going into labor... you can be 2cm dilated for 6 weeks or you can go from 0-10cm in three hours, every birth is different.
When baby drops, they'll be able to tell you right away at a regular appointment. You may even be able to tell on your own. Your belly will look different, you will feel different (it's easier to breathe but you have to pee even more often and your waddle will be much more pronounced). But that can happen weeks before delivery as well.

I went to the doc on Friday (34 wks 4 days) and she did a non-stress test because I have gestational hypertension. I was having consistent contractions, so she checked me for dilation. I was 3 cm. So, it depends on you and your doctor.

It depends on the doctor. Some dont check until full term while others will start at 36 weeks. With my first I got checked at 37 weeks and at 39 weeks. When they check for dilation they can tell dilation, effacement/thinning, and what station your baby is in (how far baby has dropped down) at once.
