Looking to donate my eggs to a specifi couple. How do I go about this and what are the risks involved? Does insurance typically cover it?

A lady I know and her husband cant have children because of her eggs. Im willing to donate if they are interested. What process would we have to go through for me to donate to her and her husband? Who do we inquire with about this proceedure? What kinds of risks does the donor face and does insurance cover the donor proceedure??? What do I need to know before donating?

Thanks for the insite. I was looking online last night too. My friend is going ot talk to her husband. They were finally looking into adoption as well. My husband is ok with my being a donor for them but I hadnt really looked into the details and what was involved. I wasnt really sure where to start. Thank you for the details!

When we used a donor, we had in place a legal agreement between us and the donor (there are attorneys who specialize in writing those particular agreements), and we each went for a psychological screening (it was one meeting with a psychologist in our case) and we paid for an insurance policy that covered her in case something went wrong with the procedure and gave her complications (I think it was a kind of health insurance policy).  We were all screened for genetically based illnesses (I think one was cystic fibrosis, but am not sure) and for STDs, HPV, etc.  She filled out a lengthy questionnaire about her family's health and how and when her grandparents died and things like that.  I believe that when the donor and the recipient are known to each other (rather than anonymous), there are other protocols suggested by the professional society that the most reputable REs belong to, but since our donor was anonymous I don't know what the differences are.

If you would contact an RE (reproductive endocrinologist) that does IVF work, you would be able to find out most of what you need to know.

For you to donate and her to be the recipient, you will need an RE's services, since you'll need to go on a regimen of hormone shots and so will she (to prepare her uterus).  Then you will need retrieval and she will need transfer, and in the meantime, someone needs to put the egg into the petri dish with the sperm so embryos can begin.  So start with the RE, and then ask them who they know that can walk you through the whole paperwork process.  They might recommend you use an agency (there are donor egg agencies out there) or an attorney.
