Not good news at the doc today

I have some not so good news from this morning and was wondering if anyone could help. I had my first Baby appointment this morning and they had to do the ultrasound where they put that thing up your vaginal to get the pics because my uterus is tipped or something. Anyway i went back to the nurses room and she said that she had some not so good news for me. she said they they weren't picking up a heart beat on the ultra sound. she said my uterus was too big for the baby, so maybe it was bigger then died, and is now shrinking. i have to go back in this Thursday for some more tests to see if my whatever them levels are called are going up or down. i am so nervous and so numb. this is my first pregnancy so anything anyone can do to give me advice on what is going on would be greatly appreciated.

This would concern me i would ring your Docs and ask them or make an appointment as you shouldnt be passing blood through your stool. See below:-

Blood in the stool may come from anywhere along your digestive tract, from mouth to anus. It may be present in such small amounts that you cannot actually see it, but is only detectable by a fecal occult blood test. When there IS enough blood to change the appearance of your stools, the doctor will want to know the exact color to help find the site of bleeding. To make a diagnosis, your doctor may use endoscopy or special x-ray studies.

A black stool usually means that the blood is coming from the upper part of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This includes the esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine. Blood will typically look like tar after it has been exposed to the body's digestive juices. Stomach ulcers caused by ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin are common causes of upper GI bleeding.

Maroon-colored stools or bright red blood usually suggest that the blood is coming from the lower part of the GI tract (large bowel or rectum). Hemorrhoids and diverticulitis (inflammation of an abnormal pouch in the colon) are the most common causes of lower GI bleeding. However, sometimes massive or rapid bleeding in the stomach causes bright red stools.

Consuming black licorice, lead, iron pills, bismuth medicines like Pepto-Bismol, or blueberries can also cause black stools. Beets and tomatoes can sometimes make stools appear reddish. In these cases, your doctor can test the stool with a chemical to rule out the presence of blood.

I know how you feel. I went through the same thing. I didn't talk to anyone for a week, but my husband was supportive. I hope he understands how difficult this is for you.
It will take time, but once you are ready you can always try again. Ive gone through this 3 times, and finally am 21 weeks and all is going well with my little girl. You will get there. Just take it easy, rest and let your body get back to normal.
The best thing for your throat for the next few days is cold things. Cough drops did not work for me, but milkshakes, and coffee colattas from DD worked wonders. If you can make a smoothie with ice, and grab a straw it works great.

I hope you feel better soon Country.

I`m so sorry. When I read your post I was crying. I passed through the same thing. My first miscarr. ended at 8 weeks with D&C. I couldn`t stop thinking about my lost and my husband couldn`t understand me. Before my missed I couldn`t believe that an early abortion can hurt so  much, but when it happened to me it was different.  You should understand your husband because he can be so much involved in pregnancy especialy so early. My second miscarr. was much more later (15 weeks) and it was horrible for both of us. I think my husband suffered more than me.
Let the time to cure your wounds....Wish you a quick recovery

Hello everyone, I actually went in and had a D&C done yesterday. i am just in the recovery stage now. i think the worst physical part is my throat. i can barely talk and it hurts to swallow because they put that big tube down my throat. my husband doesn't seem to understand why i am upset at all. my family and friends keep calling me, but i just ignore it because i don't want to talk to anyone. i just want to be by myself. my husband just thinks i am being grouchy so he goes off and does whatever so he doesn't have to be around me. i am just soo lost. how long will it take to heel the pain?

I'm very sorry for your loss... it's really tough.  I had a silimar situation to some of the other ladies... they didn't call it a "missed abortion/miscarriage" but I guess that's what it was.  Basically, at 7 weeks the baby had stopped growing.  My doc didn't even recommend a D&C unless I absolutely needed one.  He gave me two options.  I could wait for my body to release everything naturally (which he told me could take up to 2 weeks or longer)... or I could use a drug (vaginally) that actually sped up the process.  I opted for the drug b/c I just wanted it to be over.. I didn't want it to be prolonged.  I wish I could remember the name of the drug, but it worked within 24 hours and my levels dropped down to zero within a week or so.  It is something you could discuss with your doctor... it's less invasive than a D&C (and after a D&C your body needs more time to heal).  Either way... good luck.

I`m so sorry for your lost. My first misccar. was missed abortion and the same thing I didn`t felt any cramps, no bleeding and it was so hard for me to understand why it happen. I chose D&C because I couldn`t stand the psychological stress, I was crying all the time.

Both of mine were missed abortions...  eventually your body will expel everything, but it could take a very long time...  I chose the d&c both times because I couldn't stand for it to be drug out any longer...  I just needed closuer and to move one...  and it can be unsafe to wait it out sometimes, infections, etc...

If your doc recommends the d&c I would say do it--  but do what you are comfortable with...

I am so sorry you are experiencing this... it is very painful....  hugs.

Yes, I did have a D&C was for the missed abortion. A missed abortion is basically when the fetus stops developing but your body does not miscarry it. That's why they did the D&C.

I did wait about a week before having the D&C, though, to see if it would happen by itself, but when nothing happened, my doctor suggested a D&C.

My second miscarriage was a spontaneous miscarriage and happened by itself at home.

I hope you're doing OK. Take care of yourself, Countrync!

did you have to have a D&C for the missed abortion one? how do they determine what it is?

I am so sorry you're going through this. I've had two miscarriages. The first was a missed abortion (where the baby just stops growing) and the other a natural miscarriage, and I didn't have any signs either with the missed abortion. No cramping, no bleeding, still had tender breasts and fatigue...

Just wanted to send you a big hug and let you know that you're not alone. Again, Im so sorry.

Well guys i got my results back from the lab tests today. it dropped to 19,469. i guess it is safe to say now as much as i hate to that it is a miscarriage. they want me to come back in on tuesday for some more test but do you think it is even worth it? from the get go they told me if the levels dropped that it was a miscarriage,so i dont really see any rays of hope. i just dont understand how this could happen. there were no signs or anything. no cramping, no bleeding....im just sooo lost right now....

It seems like if your last period was 12/18 you should just be 11 weeks this week, rigth? it seems weird to me that your uterus could be 11 weeks if the sac is measuring 5 weeks...  did a doctor look at your ultrasound, or just the tech?  I have had 2 loses, each at 7 weeks, sac measured about 5 both times...  but they never said anything about my uterus being larger-  just the sac size...

hcg levels can vary for normal pregnancies,  23,000 could be in the normal range for 11 week along...  you should find out tomorrow if your levels have doubled?

I agree with the above poster, the level isn't as important as if they are increasing (almost doubling) and if they don't increase as much as they should, I would still request a repeat u/s....

so sorry you are going through this...  it is a very difficult thing-  I think esp with your first pregnancy...  I lost my very first one too- and it is very confusing-  I also lost my 3rd pregnancy, but that time it wasn't as overwhelming, as I had learned a lot after my first loss...  it was just as painful though...  let us know what the doc says tomorrow.

First of all, i want to thank you all for your support. it is greatly appreciated. i am in the military and away from my family (most of my close military people are either deployed or moved on to another base) so i really dont have anyone to confine in or ask questions. i am really glad i found this place! "LosingMyMindInGA" you said my hcg levels looked good, what about if my last menstral cycle puts me at farther along? will that change anything?

While there is a possibility that you miscarried, there's still a very real possibility that you HAVEN'T.  You're HCG levels look really good.  Wait and see if they rise like they are supposed to and if they do even just a little (or even if they don't) insist on a repeate ultrasoun just to be safe.

Hi,

I've has a similar experience to this twice, I don't know if it's the same thing or not, but what I've had is called a missed miscarriage, at both 12 week scans the sonographer was unable to detect the heartbeat and the baby had stopped growing at 6 weeks the first time and 9 weeks the second time around. I've had a D&C both times.

I hope it's not the case with you and wish you luck with your pregnancy.

Take care,

Sinead

I had some bleeding at 9 weeks i was referred at the hospital for a scan, the doc couldnt pick up a heartbeat he even asked if i was actually pregant!!!!! I had a blood test done to see what my hgc hormone levels were, i rang them they said i was high.Went in the next day for another blood test to test my hormone levels, i insisted on a another scan as i was in terminal about it all, this was done by a different doctor he picked up the heartbeat straight away . so dont give up hope x
