Opiates & Pregnancy

I detoxed off of pain meds when I found out, I didn't tell my suboxone doctor that I was pregnant, I did some research, and called him and he said if he knew I was pregnant he would not of prescribed me those, he suggested methadone, and that i am not supposed to go through withdrawals because it could hurt my baby. I just found out on the 5th of April that I am 3 months! I found out I was prego a few weeks before. I dabbled again when i ran out of my methadone, I was taking 30mgs percs. I am scared to tell my obgyn because of child services! I am back on methadone and am hopin my dealer doesn't run out. I want to ween myself, so I don't go through major withdrawals, and am not planning on taking them through my whole pregnancy! Any information would help!

Hon I don't mean to sound harsh, but if they test the baby's fluid at birth (and a lot of hospitals do, although not all of them) you will show up with a history of usage and that will be far worse. You need to find an OB who you feel comfortable with, and discuss your problem. Opiates during pregnancy can be taken safely, but only when the OB knows and can monitor how much you're taking and when. The dose you're at is actually fairly safe, but at this point it's not a matter of safety anymore, and yes the xanex's and "roxy's" are a lot less safe, and you need to tell him so he can look out for the problems that those drugs can cause. It's hard, but you made a mistake and you have to own up to it now. The worst that will happen (and believe it or not, it's not likely to happen) is that they'll contact a social worker who will interview you and either offer you counseling or continue to monitor your usage during your pregnancy. they will NOT take your child away from you if you're following the rules that your OB gives you, and you may find that he prefers you to stay on the opiates during the pregnancy but monitor them.

I really think you should talk to your OB it's the best for your baby, even though you're scared. They need to know what you took so they can make sure the baby is safe! This is one of those hard things you have to do as the mommy...and I can almost gurantee (but i can't promise for sure) that they won't take the baby away or send you to jail. They just want you and your baby to be healthy, so they'll do what they can to keep you together, and healthy. your baby is worth going through whatever counseling or rehab or whatever they might suggest, but the important thing is that the OB needs to know what you took so they can check the baby throughout the pregnancy for problems. xanex is one drug that CAN cause defects, so they need to know about that and the one you're currently taking. you can probably leave off the "roxy" but I don't know for sure what's in a "roxy" (other than i know it's an opiate) so I can't be sure.

I really don't mean to sound harsh and I KNOW you're trying, but the best thing to do is be honest for the baby's sake.

good luck hon

To all, I am trying to ween down so that i dont have to worry about drug testing, I want to be off of these by the 4th month or even sooner, and really try to be healthy, and hope and pray to god that my baby will be ok. I am too scared to risk telling my obgyn!!! Some of them have diff vews about it, and I have heard cases of rhem reporting it! My family knows of my addiction, but not for months now, same with the father of my baby! If they found out I don't know what would happen! I am really lowering my dosage, to the point of only being on 10mgs a day, 5 in the morning, 5 in the evening, and then lower. I have 20 to do it. I really do care about my baby, I haven't slept for weeks, I am so scared! I saw the picture of it at three months! Its beautiful, I cried for hours!!! My mom drank, smoked ciggs, and who knows what else. Only disorder I have is a.d.d., Not saying that my baby has a chance of being completely healthy, I feel I cant be that lucky! I am so depressed, and so worried, I was two months before I found out, I was taking xanax, and roxy's.. I could of already harmed it...

they do a drug test at the end of yoru pregnancy and then again at the hospital so you have to tell yoru OBGYN or you will face children's services. If you are getting medical treatment for a problem then most likey they are to help you and not hurt you!

I have to agree with Ashelen. You need to tell your doctor because you could have seriously hurt your baby during this time. Methadone is the best way to go (even though your baby will go though with drawls after birth but don't usually survive in the womb) I don't think that at 3 months the doctor is going to report you to child services but you definitely need the help to stay off of them. Methadone will keep you from cravings and with draws.

You HAVE to tell your OBGYN, it's the only safe thing. And don't go to a dealer for medication, that can be way worse than telling your OB you're hooked...because if something happened to you legally and they found out you were pregnant AND taking drugs illegally, you WOULD most likely lose your child...as opposed to going to your OB with the truth and letting them help you sort this out. I don't know what your legal rights are or what your best course of action would be other than to recommend you tell your OB for the baby's sake...he has to know so he can help you keep your baby safe. Do NOT ween yourself, but make sure you go somewhere that you are being prescribed the meds by someone who knows you are pregnant...some opiates are safe to take during pregnancy so I really don't think it's going to be as bad as you think it will be, but if you DON'T tell them it WILL be bad. Good luck
