Still feeling guilty :(

Hi all, back after along time away caring for my new little boy who is now 1 !!
Im wondering if anyone can help me or has had this problem themself, Levi was born with RDS at 38.5wks ! yes i know less than 1% of term babies have rds but he had it and was ventilated and tubed for over a wk etc anyhow i cant stop wondering what caused it i have asked pediatrition and they say nothing his lungs were just never going to mature. Anyhow i took ZOLOFT while pregnant only 50mg per day im now wondering if any of you think this may have contributed?
i just cant seem to let this go i looked it up again tonight and some studies seem to say it can??
he suffered so much had to go through alot and i feel so guilty i dont know why
anyone?
anyone else been pregnant on zoloft and not hadan  rds baby? that might help me also.
Thanks ladies :) Hoping your all well i check in from time to time to see the gossip just hardly have time to write once again thanks in advance!

I'm so sorry you are feeling guilty.  You absolutely should not.  If anyone should it is the doctors & nurses who told you that it was safe to take.  They are trained professionals.  We put our trust in the doctors to tell us what is right.  You listened & did what you were told.  THIS IS NOT YOUR FAULT!

Just try and think positive and don't blame yourself seriously nothing you could have done this isn't your fault. I know when things go wrong it's hard not to blame ourselves but please don't blame yourself!  Big hugs!!

Zoloft is much safer than Klonipin in pregnancy. I'm pregnant and taking zoloft it is the safest thing you can take for anxiety or depression in pregnancy. I don't think that zoloft was the cause I truly don't. I think when things like this happen we feel guilty an look for a reason even when there isn't one. Unfortunately sometimes it's just what happens there isn't always an explanation. I'm truly sorry that your child has this it must have been very scary for you but don't blame yourself. And Beautifulmistake-please see your psychiatrist and get medication these are serious conditions that require medication and treatment in order for you to be healthy and for your baby to be healthy. Especially you have more than one disorder which puts you at risk for self harm and suicide. I know we all think the what if but it's safer for you and your baby if you get the help and treatment than if you don't. I say this is not only a friend but someone who is finishing up their PhD in Clinical Psychology

Thanks ladies. I mean I know I need the medication, because I felt better with it, but if it harms my baby NO THANKS! I'll wait until it's born! I was taking lamictal 100 mg 2x's a day as well as Klonipin...

Hey Tab, yeah Levi was induced at 38.5 wks due to my pain i had SI Joint disfunction in my back and also tendonitis anyhow he came out not breathing totally purple was horrible they got him breathing but over the next few hrs he just got worse, grunting struggling to breathe they then sent him to special care at 4 hrs old for monitoring thinking hed be fine and he was just in shock well he never came back from there i saw him on and off and then he had blood sugar test that was way too low, then was canulated over the next 8hrs he got worse and worse he was on CPAP made him worse they called in a specialist they thought was enlarged heart from xray then specialist said he new it was rds and hed need to be flown to mothiers hospital tonight anyhow long story he was given surfactant ventilated then flown 1hr away to special hospital where he was for 2 wks he slowly got better was on ventilator for 4 days tube fed poked and proded i hated it we travelle dup there 2 times a days to see him and after 4 days he was allowed to start tube feeds (hed just been on glucose)  so i took my milk up for him he had a few set back but we got to take him home 2 wks later and then just had a few feeding issues etc as hed been tube fed for a long time, he had to learn it all :)

Oh Emma! I am so sorry you are feeling so guilty! I had no idea that Levi was born with any kind of problems and since I havent seen you on MH in soooooo long I had assumed everything was okay. How is he doing now??? Cant believe he is just about one!!! Our babies are grown so fast!
BTW- I just looked up RDS because I had no clue what it was and I have to say I dont think it was anything you did, but thats just my opinion:~) After reading that I am so happy he is a survivor!!! Thats some scarey stuff!!
Hugs, Tabitha

OMG! You guy's are really scaring me now. I suffer from bipolar, and severe depression as well as other things and my OB want me to see a phychiatrist (sp) and get back on meds but I'm scared to death that it will hurt my baby! :( I suffered from severe PPD after my first 3 were born, and I don't want to go through it again but I don't want to take anything that will harm this baby... ;( What should I do ?

Im so very sorry for your loss. Our dr gave us the stats that its less than 1% of FULL TERM BABIES have rds many premmies have it im aware of that its most common in babies born before 28wks But as the suffactant that they need in their lungs is produced between week 30-34 they couldnt explain why levi had it just to say its extremly rare at full term (big babies 4kg+) they have said that it wouldnt have mattered if i had gone till 45wks his lungs still wouldnt have made the suffactant needed. Also mentioned its more common in c-section.
Levi was very unwell for along time im now very interested in all this, have been interested in medical for along time but now researching this condition.
thanks for your help!

I took Zoloft in my pregnancy due to being depressed abd she was born at 23 weeks and unable to survive, she seemed well developed though, they did not try to resusitate her because she was not 24 weeks.

They can have it from epidurals and c-sections as well! the 1% is not accurate at all, it is more around 13% of c=section babies and 7% of epidural babies have it. You learn the statisics in midwifery school. the us does not have accurate reporting so it is higher then those numbers. Oh and more then half of preemies have it!

were you induced? that is happening more and more tyhat the mother is induced and the baby is not ready. It takes 40 weeks for a baby to fully develope!
