holy hives! question!

So for tha past 3 months my six year old has been breaking out in hives that pretty much look like he's been beaten with a whip. They don't last long but they are more frequent then not. They will appear all over his face and then ten minutes later they are gone but he'll have some on his back, legs and stomach ect. He's been to the pediatrician a dozen times about this and all they say is "he has hives for the sake of having them". Which I'm assuming they mean kids just break out with them for no reason. Her advice was benadryl 3 times a day after one recommended dose my son passed out for hours and I was told to cut the dose in half. Well that didn't work he still got them. So I started him on claritin and it seemed to limit the amount of them he was getting but didn't eliminate them altogether. The doctor still insists there's nothing wrong. She won't do any testing to see what he's allergic to because she so sure he'll grow out of it. My next step is to contact an allergist but my question is has anyone dealt with type of thing? Do kids really just break out in hives for absolutely no reason?? These things are extremely uncomfortable for him and he's constantly scratching and digging.

Yes stress can cause hives and the new baby could be it. Half the time I don't even know it is happening till somebody points it out but it fades away. I took a antihistamine for it for a little while but now I just live with it. You can't live completely stress free. It's impossible.

My son had this. One Dr said hives another eczema. Free and clear, unscented EVERYTHING. I tried eucerin, cetaphil, all the expensive stuff. My personal experience is.. any sign of it... Paste that child it a&d. The carmexy kind. Once its gone slowly add in your normal products top figure out what the cause was. An allergy test on my son prooved to make him miserable. They wanted him on 3 medications including a steroidal creme. Ick!

Thank you for responses! I have switched all house hold products including laundry detergents, body soaps, lotions, cleaning supplies you name it I did it. My first thought was he was allergic to the outside environment because it started when the weather first broke. And he was outside a lot more and would come back covered in them. Well he's actually been at my mothers house for a few weeks before school starts and she claims his hives are worse then before. She does live in a very wooded area so I was still going with that thought of it being from outside. And I know its not that hard to rule out certain things if he would only be tested.

@spiket77~ stress huh? That could make sense too. He has been regressing a lot about the new baby coming in october. Do you think that could be causing it too?

I have used the same pediatrician for six years and have never had an issue with them until now. I wish she would have taken me more seriously because I was so comfortable going there and planning on using them for my daughter when she's born. Looks like I might have to research and try to find a new one before october.

I have contacted the allergist seems like they're booked up for the next few weeks! I was put on a cancellation list so hopefully he can be seen before school starts! If not he can go during the first week of september.

Try the allergist route. You could also look at stuff in your home. if you don't already use free&clear products than switch over...also look at your cleaning products and clean out all of the air filters.

I break out in hives from stress alone. I have since I was a child. I would hate for him to have that same cause but it is possible. It doesn't mean physological stress either...I can push myself too hard in a work out, have a hard work meeting, have too many people in my house...and BAM hives. :/

I would definitely call an allergist especially if his doctor isn't doing anything. Kids do not just randomly break out into hives for no apparent reason. If he is allergic to something then you as a mother should know what that is so he isn't miserable. The doctor sounds like an idiot. (No offense).
Hopefully you get some answers & soon!

It definitely doesn't happen for no reason. It has to be something in the house. I would change soaps one at a time to see if that helps.

Pardon my language but that's a crock of ****. Kids don't just break out for no reason. There is something environmental that he is allergic to. Could be anything from dust to laundry soap. Don't let them boss you around like that. You deff have the right idea about the allergist. They can't tell you no so just keep pushing for your child. Good luck. Keep us updated.
