babys cord smell..what to do?

My son is ten days old & his cord stump really stinks. I put rubbing alcohol on it, but it really stinks. Is there anything I can do to help the smell or just wait till it falls off?

No you are not supposed to put alcohol on it anymore that's something that changed since I had my son three years ago also no it should not stink I've never known a child who's did. Call your doc or pediatrician they can help you better

Thanks, hubby & I can only smell it if we are holding him or what not. It's so close to falling off, it's only hanging on by a tiny little bit. I find it to be nasty, but hopefully it falls off tonight and he will smell good again. thanks for all the response tho.

All of my kids cords, I had to go back and have the pedi put silver nitrate on them because they would never heal or fall off in their own.(all 3 kids)  I would make an appointment and have it checked.  May be the case with ur little one.

DS's didn't smell the best, but it was only when I got close to it, you shouldn't smell it from an arms length away or anything, unless it's pussing or any real signs of infection, don't worry about it! Alcohol is okay as well, like the other ladies said, it helps to dry it up!

Yes alcohol is a must helps fall off faster and it does not hurt the baby its not like your dumping it on there you use a qtip and rub it on

Yes the dr tells u to put alcohol on it to help dry it out.  If u can lift up at the edges of the cord stump & smell something bad, or if u see any pus or any liquid like that it's time to see the dr. however, if u lift up the cord stump & it comes up real easy & almost off & there is only a little smell to it then I would tell u to keep doing what ur doing with the alcohol swabs, do it at every diaper change. If it still concerns u, of course consult ur doctor.

Big no no, you shouldnt put anything, specially alcohol its not yet healed and it hurts to the baby, yes, it might be infected, usually at 10 days, the stump is already dry, without any odor. try to go to the doctor for further management
