Here's some info from the folks who set the standards by which pediatricians should get their recommendations.

From the World Health Organization: "Breastfeeding is an unequalled way of providing ideal food for the healthy growth and development of infants; it is also an integral part of the reproductive process with important implications for the health of mothers. As a global public health recommendation, infants should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life to achieve optimal growth, development and health.
Thereafter, to meet their evolving nutritional requirements, infants should receive nutritionally adequate and safe complementary foods while breastfeeding continues for up to two years of age or beyond."

Also, "the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) reaffirms its recommendation of exclusive breastfeeding for about the first six months of a baby's life, followed by breastfeeding in combination with the introduction of complementary foods until at least 12 months of age, and continuation of breastfeeding for as long as mutually desired by mother and baby."

I nursed my son for two years and would have continued longer if I hadn't gotten really sick and needed to take medications for a while that weren't safe to pass along to him. I miss it terribly.

The age depends on the person. Some people stop like after a year or so. I know one lady who breastfed until her child was 8 (long time).
