Solid aerolas?

Hi Ladies,

I am currently 16 1/2 weeks along.  The past couple weeks, I have been waking up on some days with my nipples and aerolas being completely solid-not like nipping out either.  The aerolas are filled out with I don't know what!  But they are sensitive when at this stage, and look like the skin is bulging!  It's very strange.  

I've used Google to try to figure out what its called, or what exactly it means.  I do not have any leaking or anything like that.  

I guess if this is/has happened to anyone else, I would love to know...I just think its really odd and do not want to be the only one!  lol.

Aw, thank you girls!  I am so glad to have a bunch of different responses!  

Yeah...it is strange.  for me, by the time bed rolls around, it's like the "swelling" goes down.  :P  not sure
momof2..- Yeah.  I am glad to hear that people know exactly what I'm talking about!!!  And where the Montgomery Tubercles are, there's lines and creases in the aureoles too.  :P

same thing with me.  I guess it's normal.  I just clean out the stuff with baby oil and cotton after taking a bath.  But yes they look weird and huge with little bums around the areola.  very very tender some say it will subside a bit but will come back due to them getting ready for the little one

My nipples have definitely increased in size, seem firmer to the touch (and somewhat more leatherly feeling), and are getting darker. They used to be a pink rosy hue and now they are more a brownish hue. I am currently 23 weeks, so sounds like you are experiencing the normal changes needed for you to be able to breastfeed.

my nipples did the same thing and they look awful they were so puffy and just down right huge. my nipples never got sore however they stayed like that until after i had my daughter. Alaina was around three months old when it finally went away and now its coming back with this pregnancy

Our bodies seem to do a lot of strange things when we're pregnant!  I'm not exactly sure what you mean ...all I can think of is 'hard nipples' when you talk about solid areolae.  I know the one morning I woke up and it seemed like my areolae were trying to take over my breasts!  They were huge!!  

I'm sure it's just the hormones pumping thru your body ...like I said, our pregnant bodies do a lot of strange things.  At your next appointment, bring up your concerns to your doctor and s/he can check it out and let you know if it's something to be worried about.
