different to USA

Im a ftm who lives in Australia, I am always watching those programs like a baby story and one born every minute USA so I always had a fair idea on how things work after l&d but my midwife imformed me that it was completely different. As soon as my baby is delivered they will put her straight onto my chest for skin to skin contact and she will stay there for about an hour and search for my breast when she is ready to feed, they also wont weigh her untill after her first meal, i guess i should of known it wouldnt of been the same to america but im glad i know what to expect now.

I'm also a ftm from nsw Australia :) 33+2 with a suprise gender baby.. I think mainly the shows from America that we watch are just generally showing the dramas that can happen when a baby is born so its not really any indication as to whether they do things differently. In a normal labour and birth they do the exact same as they would here unless the mother otherwise stated, or there were complications. Good to hear there are some more Aussies on here though and good luck with your bub :)

In the UK they recommend skin to skin as soon as baby born before they cut the cord, breastfeed etc but it depends on what momma wants. I wanted skin to skin straight away, cord cut by baby daddy then breastfeed but cause i got emergency section the Dr cut the cord, they lifted him over the curtain to let us see then took him away for his apgar as he had a traumatic time, then they gave him to his dad to hold, still not cleaned while i got got stapled up, i got him in skin to skin contact and breast fed while in recovery. They've always put baby on my chest right away and we snuggle, then theyve weighed baby right there check vitals, and given them back to me for at least an hour before getting baby all cleaned up.

I personally like to see baby before they clean them off. I love that fresh baby "I've just been birthed" smell :) I'm a weirdo

In my hospital, in Canada, they clean the baby really quick and do a quick test to check their reflexes and reactions and then do skin to skin. They don't really say you have a certain time, they just let you do your thing unless there is some sort of problem with baby or mom . They encourage breastfeeding asap. They also have these pretty wicked bracelets that make an alarm go off if the baby gets taken too far from the mother, I thought that was a nifty security feature.

It depends on what kind of experience you want. Some dont want skin to skin immediately and don't want to breast feed etc. that's normally what a birth plan is for to outline what you want if everything goes smoothly
