Lots of contractions

Im 38w and yesterday around 4:25 p.m I started having contractions. They didnt hurt, my stomach would just get rock hard and it was a little harder to breathe. It was happening about every 5-10 minutes. Around 7 something, I started feeling pain on my entire stomach and all through my back. But it was only like that some times. Most of the time it was small and medium pains. I started timing them. One came at 7:42 and stopped at 7:43, another one that was a bit more pain came at 7:43 and stopped at 7:44. Some times it wouldnt come for about 2 or 3 minutes. I went to the hospital, I didnt get there until around 10. The pains started barely coming on my way up there. When I arrived and they put the contraction monitor on me, they rarely even came so it looked like I was faking all of those other ones. I only had 3 at really irregular times. She checked to see if Im dilated...which Im not..at all, and sent me home. So I know I wasnt in labor but does anyone know what that was? Is it normal? Im having a painless contraction right now actually, they just come at random times now.
