Getting Induced?!

Hey ladies! I recently had a doctors appt this past week with my ob, and she decided that she is goin to induce me on January 22nd. I'm not due until the 28th, but I have had some minor complications with my pregnancy.
I had some light bleeding in the first trimester, I got diagnosed with an itrritable uterus at the begining of November because I was having contractions early and have been on moderate bed rest since. I also have smoked ciggarettes my whole pregnancy, and I am currently on a prescription for vicodin due to very bad back problems. I am a VERY small girl, (before pregnancy, I was 110 lbs and I am 5'1, I am now 155-but 90% of the weight is in my belly). All the tests I have had have come back good (ultrasounds, glucose, etc.) I also had an ultrasound last week to check Baby Kael's position and size... He is positioned head first, and weighs about eight pounds as of now.
I was wondering if anyone else has been induced because of minor complications. I have heard that being induced brings on stronger and more painful contractions, that inducement also puts your baby at a higher risk to enter NICU, and that being induced is more likely to lead you to a c-section (although, since I am so small boned, my doctor has already warned me it is a possibility).
I jsut want someone else who has been in the situations opinion, and support (i'm very nervous!!) thank you so much!!

Also being induced you have to watch out. You can have hyper contractions. And babys heartbeat can drop. I am pregnant now. I will never risk being induced ever again. My daughter was in the NICU for 5 days. I am suing the hospital for my child birth trauma. You can always say you dont want to be induced. Just know that if you do. Please watch the baby on the screen. Also your epidural might not work

I thaught maybe you would like to read my birth story of my daughter. I think being induced is BULL CRAP... READ WHAT I WENT THROUGH> AND yes everyones is different. But alot of womens babys are born with problems from being induce.

From the day I found out I was pregnant I was so happy. Then I learned I was having a little girl, but I knew that before the doctors told me. I had a gut felling. I had these dreams that showed me playing with a little girl with long curly hair. I had to go tell everyone the good news. Everyone was so happy for me. I even went to Minnesota for my baby shower. It was so much fun. I received a lot of cool gifts for my soon to be baby. She didn't have a name yet. My little brother Austin and I were looking on the computer. And he said name her Desiree Alexis. I liked it, but I did want to name her Lacedes Jlynn. I had to choose what name would best fit for my child and I took the name. Desiree Alexis Darwin. It would be good because then her Initials would be DAD. Months went by. I was getting ready to be a mommy watching the baby channel all day everyday. I saw moms in a lot of pain, but they were all ok after they got that epidural. I knew I would have to get one of them shots when I had my little Desiree. Dr. Curran was worried about the size of my little Desiree. She ordered an ultrasound. My stomach was measuring 3 in a half weeks farther then what the doctor's thought I was. The ultrasound my baby was a healthy baby. Weighing about 8 pounds and her head was about 15 inches. I was like wow. Well Dr. Curran and I thought it would be best if Desiree was born early due to her size. I under went an amniocentesis and they told me that my baby's lungs were mature. I was like yeah. She's coming to the world now. That night in may. I was being induced, but guess what it failed. So I had to go home and try a few days later. The next night after going home from the first induction. My little baby was not moving. And my stomach was rock hard. I was scared I thought something was wrong. I rushed back up to the hospital. The doctor told me you Desiree were fine. I went home and waited for June first. The day I get to go back and try to have her again. This time it worked. The morning of June second was the worst day of my life and also the best day. While in labor my contractions were getting so strong I needed some pain medication. I didn't want an epidural yet. The doctors gave me stadol. That stuff made me feel funny. Well time went on. And that after noon I had to get a epidural while trying to get it Desiree your little heart began to drop the nurse told me to hurry up and lay down. Then she told me to sit up and try again but your heart dropped. I had to lay down and put on an oxygen mask . I was scared I didn't know what was happening. Then I finally got that good shot. Later on your little heart was dropping. And Dr. Curran came running in. Talking about we are going to do a C-section. I hurried up and called grandma Tammy. And she was up there within a few minutes. Well Dr. Curran came back and said that she was leaving. And that if your heart (Desiree) dropped again that the doctors would have no choice but to do a C-section. Well during the time the doctor left I noticed by looking at the fetal strips that her heart was dropping. The nurse ran in and said you need to lay on your right side and keep an oxygen mask on. I said ok. Well a few hours later I was ready to push. I felt something big down there. I had a felling that my childs head was going to be to big. I also seen her heart dropping and I told the nurse over and over please give me a C-section and she would not tell the doctors. Finally the doctors walked in. and I was pushing. The doctor was worried because your heart (Desiree) was dropping. At times they told me I had to wait to push because of your heart I was scared. I was crying and pleading with these doctors to give me a C-section. Well I pushed for two hours five minutes. When your head was coming out I said no her head is stuck it's too big. The doctors said no it's not push it out. Well she was stuck and the doctors had to cut me. And the doctor began pulling on your little head trying to get you out well that wasn't working so she pushed down on mommies tummy and started pulling on your head while mommy was pushing. Finally your head was out. But guess what your little shoulders were stuck to. The doctors were pulling on your little head to get you out of mommy. Finally you were out, but you were dark in color and the doctors took off running with you. I was crying because I didn't know what to think because I didn't hear you cry, and you were born dead. I was screaming let me see my baby. Finally they brought you to me. I seen you. The doctors then had to bring you to the NICU because your head was swollen and your oxygen level was down. Well mommy had to take a bath. I rushed so I could see you. Finally when I got out the nurse told me you were in the regular nursery. I walked in there and seen you. I started to cry because you were so beautiful, and your head was so badly bruised and crushed. And you also had shoulder dystocia. Your head had a big bump on the forehead area and the rest of your head was shaped like a cone head also you had a big open cut on your head. I could think about nothing but how much pain you were in. well the nurses would not let you go back to my room yet because of your head so I said ok. The next morning mommy woke up and Dr. Curran walked in and said you were back in the NICU. She then told mommy that you should have been c-sectioned. She said if she would have been here that she would have done one. Well days past mommy was upset because of what had happened to you. The doctor told mommy that you had a skull fracture and a bleed and blood clots and much more. You also had a deformed head. Well you also had a scare on your head from your head scrapping on mommy's pelvic bone. The day came you were going home. I brought you to your first baseball game. Everyone said you were the most beautiful baby they have seen. They also couldn't believe all the pain you were going thorough now and when you were being born. Well we got home that night and mommy noticed that all you wanted to do was sleep. So guess what mommy had to wake you up every two to three hours so you could eat. You use to throw it up all over me everytime I feed you. Well then a day after being home with you a lady knocked on my door. She said she was a woman from CPS. She came in and said she had a report from the hospital that I gave you a skull fracture and everything else. I was like how is that? I was never left alone with my child. Well the nice lady did find out that you were never in a room with mommy. I was like why would a hospital call CPS on a mom that was never left alone with their child. Well I didn't care. All I was worried about was you. And making sure you was ok everyday. Well that's it for now. So little baby you can ask more questions when you're older about your birth and how it happened and your whole life.

Thank you so much for the info! I have done my own research, and I do trust my doctor (She has been my OB since I was 14, and I am now 25), Im just really nervous about the whole labor thing in general. I know its bound to happen lol and it was inevitable the day i decided to get pregnant. The thing with my doctors office is that which ever doctor is on call the day you go into labor is the doctor who will be delivering your child. I would rather know my doctor is gonna be the one delivering my baby, since I know and trust her. All the information you gave me was very helpful tho!! tahnk you!!

ANOTHER PS Last one I promise, LOL! I forgot you mentioned being "small boned". I just want you to know that that has NOTHING to do with anything. Your pelvis expands, no matter your size, to accommodate your baby. While some women do have a truly small pelvis or fused tailbone it is a very very very small minority and would need a special scan to diagnose.

The best position to give birth in for someone of your size, if you fear baby getting stuck, is on your side, on your hands-and-knees or squatting (hospitals have squat bars you can request; if you do end up with an epidural you can request that the lower half of the bed be lowered so you're semi-standing with the support of the bed behind you and hold on to the squat bar BUT you MUST give them enough time to prepare the squat bar or they won't be able to get it on the bed for you so tell them when you arrive).

Pushing while lying on your back, even semi-sitting, is the worse position to push in and increases the likelihood of forceps or vacuum suction on baby's head, the likelihood of the doctor cutting an episiotomy and shoulder dystocia).

PS You CAN decline any medical procedures, including induction. Birth isn't a disease to be cured and treated. And while doctors have gone to medical school for training they are NOT properly prepared for true labor and birth. So I know most people say, "Trust them; they're your doctor. They know more than you!" But in the instance of birth I just do NOT agree for the majority of them.

Birth has become so medicalized that women who do not need interventions are receiving them anyway. Assembly line birth is what I call it. Most doctors induce before due dates as well so they can have 9-5 births and be home in time for dinner. While I don't blame them for wanting to be home I also feel that if they signed up to deliver babies then they need to be prepared to be available when those babies decide to come. And the time they come that is most safe is when baby and your body know the time is right.

Good luck with whatever happens! Your choice is yours to make. I made some pretty passionate remarks based on my OWN personal opinions. Ultimately you need to go with your gut. Your question tells me you do not want to be induced... so if you don't then don't!

It is definitely true that you are at an increased risk of needing a cesarean when you are induced. You are on your back in bed so your movement is restricted (laboring women need to move, to sway and to walk) so your body isn't able to labor on its own very well, you have Pitocin bringing on stronger but less effective contractions. Because of the pain from the Pitocin you decide to get an epidural which has been proven to increase labor by 90 minutes or more and now you're numb. Because of the epidural you now have to have a catheter so you can empty your bladder into a bag next to the bed because you can't get up to go pee. You have monitors strapped on you and all these "things" basically tying you to the bed and keeping you immobile.

Because of this immobility and all of these things happening TO your body instead of just letting your body be in control... your doctor can say, "Okay you've been here too long it is time to cut baby out." OR your baby could become distressed from the Pitocin (it causes such hard contractions that it can decrease oxygen to baby) that they say, "Time for emergency c-section because baby's heart rate is irregular/dropping."

The BEST thing you can do for your baby and for yourself is to let labor happen when it is ready to happen. I recommend watching The Business of Being Born (you can watch online for free if you search for it or have Netflix).

I was induced this time around (baby #3) at almost 40 weeks. I was also induced in 2006 with my 2nd child and at that time I was only 37 weeks. These were due to my pregnancy complications as well. My first child was born at 37 weeks too but my water had broken then. But if I recall correctly they did give me pitocin at that time also to get me contracting more. I never had any problems with any of my children being induced.  They were all super healthy. Since I had the epidural and don't have a base for comparison for the contractions without pitocin/oxytocin, I can't say if the contractions were worse than if I'd gone into labor on my own. But the inductions weren't bad at all.  Up until the epidural was administered the contractions were painful, but not terribly so. You will be fine and have your precious bundle very soon! :o)

if it is your first delivery then it for sure increases the chance of needing intervention like epidural, vacuum/forceps, c-section...
I dont think that it increases the need for the NICU... your baby is fully developed so the induction really doesnt have any effect on the health of the baby that I know of...

You should be trying to go into labour on your own before your induction date cause your baby is full term a 37 weeks... I have a induction set for the 7th of Feb but I dont plan on making it that far but sometimes babies dont come till they are good and ready... this is my third delivery so the dr is not concerned about me needing a c section...he thinks that I will do fine... I did here it is more painful...

I know 2 people personally that have been induced the one was induced and her cervix would not dilate more than 1 cm... and then the other girl I know had a 4 hour labour

try drinking red raspberry tea everyday now till you deliver... I am and I did with my second child and my labour was only 30 mins... it helps to prepare the uterus... also do lots of walking and sex will help get your cervix soft and so will pineapple....
