heating pads and hot baths?

Okay so I am starting to get back pains and it makes it hard to sleep, is it safe to use a heating pad or soak in a hot bath. Some sites advise against the hot bath for prolonged use, so I want to know from some people who are experienced and see if it's okay.

Both are ok as long as you keep the heat low. Think more of a real warm bath. I used the heating pad through my whole first pregnancy and warm baths are especially helpful with contractions real and bh. Ive done both again this time too. My docs actually recommended them because warm water stops bh contractions and warm bath with Epsom salt helps reduce swelling and ease aches. You don't want to sit in the water too long though. 20 minutes tops.

I use a heating pad for my lower back. I'm too scared to lie on my back so I haven't tried a hot bath.
