I'm very sorry for your loss. I had two dwarf hamsters when I was a teenager and even though people consider them "disposable pets" they are smart and full of character. I had a really hard time getting over their deaths and didn't get another pet for 2 years. I am sure your son feels bad and you did the right thing by taking him to talk to someone.
my cousin got up one morning and cut his fish in half. now this wasn't an accident he knew what he was doing. he was young then. but he 21 now and he turned out fine.
My son is 4 years old and his hamster just died. He was devastated about it. My reaction was more like ur sons and his reaction was more like urs. He cried all day I felt bad but not horrible about it. I think as a mom you did the right thing. Had my 4 yr old had killed his hamster I would've taken him to be seen by a therapist as well. Serial killers typically show signs of animal cruelty and mutilation at a very young age as well as insomnia. I had my middle son seen when we noticed he would literally stay up wandering the house all night. You did the right thing. Hopefully ge learns from this and keep a watchful eye when the new baby arrives just to make sure things go easy.
My neice somehow managed to kill two of our birds on two different occasions and we had no idea how it happened. I didnt think anything of it, sometimes kids dont kniw their own strength.. have u ever see a little kid around a kitten? Ha! Poor animals get tortured if you dont watch them closely. I dont think anything is wrong with your son im sure if he knew the reality of killing something he would be more careful. Sorry for ur loss tho
@visitorj if your gonna be rude you don't have to comment. I'm not running to a therapist because he messed up, he wasn't telling me what he did and I needed to make sure it wasn't intentional because yes some 4 year olds kill animals on purpose and it becomes a pattern. I as a mother wanted to make sure that wasn't the case. I'm trying to major in child development and when something like happens it's recommended for a child to see someone. I didn't do it to mess him up I did it to help him for your information.
uh hes 4 lol im sure it was an accident. gonna screw him up more by running to the therapist everytime he messes up. it freaking ***** that your hamster died but with little kids small pets get hurt so easy.
Oh sorry i didnt read the part where you said you dont want more pets
It sounds like a total accident. I had a hamster when my sister was 4 and she took it out of the cage and fell on it and broke his legs. I think kids really dont know any better at that point. From what i read kids dont understand cause and effect until a lot older. Im sorry about your hamster. I dont know how youd feel about it, but guinea pigs are really really cool. They make different sounds for different things and you can train them to come to thier name and potty in a litter box. And they are bigger, possibly more sturdy for a 4 year old to hold.
It sounds like an accident, you did the right thing by taking him to a counsellor and she's not concerned so I don't think you should be either. Just give your boy a hug and let it be. These things happen, sorry!
My daughter killed her fish at 4, I know a fish is smaller but it was still the fact. She had him for a long while in her room in a tank and one day decided she wanted to play with it... she dumped the tank all over her room and played with the fish! When it stoped moving she put it in a pillow case and threw it on the ground and came out screaming. Sometimes kids are curious! It's unfortunate but they don't understand death and that it is forever! I think he was likely just being a boy, and made a mistake. Don't write it of in your head, however it sounds more like an accident then a full out deranged calculated action.
I don't want any other pets. Plus the pathologist said it isn't a good idea until he's older and has a better understanding of what happened. It makes me so sad though he keeps asking why I buried him and asks me to please put him back because it's cold outside. I think i'm gonna hold up on getting new pets any time soon.
I had a long talk with him and told him we can't have pets for a while. I would let Rigby (my hamster) run around my room and when I'd call for him he'd come out of where ever he was and wait for me to pick him up. I've never come across another animal with such a big personality. Do I have to hit his hands hard? I don't really ever hit him on his hands just because my uncle did that with his daughter and the vein in her little hand bursted.
Im so sorry that happened. I have had all linds of animals and have always become very attached. But i dont think he did it on purpose at all and def think you are more emotional because youre prego. No doubt...so take a deep breath:) and maybe get a stronger animal the kids cant hurt as much. Ferrets are wonderful pets.
Just tell your son to be careful tht there still a baby, and spank his hands if you have too. I have 2 baby puppies and my son is rough and I would have to be very careful. I knw how you feel when you get attached to animals as I'm an animal love. I had a hamsters as well, her name was angel lol she was like my lil puppy cz I would let her loose and when I call her she would come and she was smart too cz she knew how to get out. Sadly one of my brother friends thought it was funny to step on her and when I came home frm school she was there dead /:
How old is your son? Little kids don't understand how rough they can be with animals especially small ones. When I was 3 I accidentally killed my moms rabbit cuz she jumped out of my arms n broke her back.. Some times accidents just happen hamsters are small animals
